Date: 9/7/12 8:39 AM I would have put this under embroidery but thought it would get more response here. For you owners of the bigger hoop machines, (bigger then 5 x 7) are you finding you are using the bigger hoops a lot. My machine biggest is 5 x 7 can combine to make bigger designs for the giga hoop but I rarely do. Did more of that in the beginning. It's partially a time factor for me. Even some 5 x 7 designs can take hours. One of the biggest changes when they upgrade the machines if hoop size. I'm not even sure what the biggest size of a design is now. ------ quiltingwolf.blogspot.com |

Date: 9/7/12 10:10 AM I have the mega hoop and the jumbo hoop for the 830LE, and I use both quite a bit. If I want to try a few designs, I'll go them all at once in a single hooping.
I've started to do buttonholes with the emb unit as well, so the large hoops are perfect for doing the front of a shirt/jacket in one pass.

Date: 9/7/12 4:47 PM Any size you want as long as you can functionally split the design, reposition the hoop as needed and continue adding the sections that were split.
You want to know maximum embroidery area, and I do not see that in any ads, but then I did not do an in-depth search.
Call a dealer and ask what is the maximum embroidery area for the model XYZ without using a repositonable hoop. |

Date: 9/7/12 8:42 PM I have a Viking Diamond DeLuxe and the largest design it can do is 13x14 with the majestic hoop I believe. It can do this size in one hooping BUT it splits it in half and you need to turn hoop half way through it. I didn't buy the hoop and don't plan on it since I have nothing to use it for. I know a few people who have this hoop and have either never used it or the ones who did have said it was a pain since you have to use design positioning to line up the two halves.
The largest it can stitch out in a single hooping AND single stitch out is the 8x14 hoop. I have used this hoop several times.
The 8x8 hoop is what I have been using the most. In fact I'm currently doing an Anita Goodesign quilt project and been using this hoop A LOT. Oh, and some of these quilt blocks can take up to 3 hours to stitch out including trimming appliqués, etc., during it.
But even with the availability of all these larger hoops, along with the 8x8, I still use the 5x7 quite a bit.
In the end, it's nice to have the ability to go larger if you want to even if most of the time you find yourself using the 5x7. The other part of it is cost. As you probably already know, the larger you go, the more $$$ it's going to cost. Even the hoops are very pricey! I think the Viking 8x8 hoop alone cost me $175.00.
Oh, and I think the Bernina 10x16 does do it all in one stitch out with out splitting the design. If I remember right, it is the largest hoop for home machine embroidery that does it in one hooping and one stitch out.

Date: 9/7/12 9:34 PM Don't know how determined/crazy/obsessed you want to get... lol...
(just teasin') ....
but do you know about hoopitall.com ?
One of the machines on my radar is possibly an Ellisimo Gold... and I've heard good things about this hoopitall product.
I just went there to look... and they have a 15" x 25" option - without having to flip or re-hoop.
Spendy, but possible.

On my radar someday: Babylock Serger, and some machine for travel.
My dearest wish is to have Bernina come out with a machine that doesn't give me a reason to *not* buy it.
