A new family-owned fabric store has opened in downtown Dayton (E. Brown St.) called Sew Dayton. I just saw a short piece about them on the local news.

It looks like they carry garment fabric as well as patterns and notions. They will also be offering a custom dressmaking service.

They have a "soft opening" this weekend - I'm hoping to get down there today to check them out. I'm so hoping they out to be an alternative to JA and Hancocks!

This is so exciting, not only for Dayton sewists but also for downtown revitalization efforts.

I'll report back after I vist...

Wait, you still have Hancocks? Let us know how Sew Dayton is. If it's worth a 1 - 1.5 hour drive, please tell me!!

I went to Sew Dayton on Saturday, but they weren't open. I guess Friday's "soft opening" was just for that day. They officially open this coming Friday (Sept 14) - I'll go back either then or on Saturday.

I did peek in the window - the shop is really tiny, and there were only about 15 - 20 bolts of fabric visible, but there was a back room I couldn't see into.

More later...

Yeah, there's still a Hancocks here, but the garment fabric selection has really gone down hill in the past few years. I only go there for the occasional pattern sale. They still do have nice home dec fabric though.

Check Hancocks again. There is a nice store across from "the Green" My daughter went to Wright State and lived near there so I stopped in there a couple of times. Hancock's has gotten more apparel fabric in lately-hopefully this will be the trend and they will continue to expand fabric selection. I live in Cincinnati but would drive to Dayton if the new store is worth it. Thanks for the info.

There are also two or three Hancock stores in the greater Cincinnati area.

Higher end fabric are available at Banasch located on Red Bank road.

Yes there are three in Cincinnati/greater KY area. All the people at the one know my name now (what does that tell you?) It is a smaller store-that one in Dayton seems to have some selection that mine doesn't. The weekends are usually my shopping day so if I was visiting my daughter it was more convenient to go to the one by her-it is a large store although the people in there are not as friendly as the store by me.

Actually that is the Hancock's that I go to - there used to be another one close to the Dayton Mall, but it closed a number of years ago. I didn't notice any improvement in the fabric the last time I was there, but I'll check it out next time I'm in the area. Thanks for the heads up!

One thing I'm looking forward to with Sew Dayton is their "sewing parties". I live close enough that I could regularly attend them; I don't know if it would be worth it to come in from Columbus or Cincinnati though.

I don't think Sew Dayton will be able to compete with Banasch's as far as fabric selection goes. They are just too small. But I'm hoping the quality of their fabric makes up for lack of quantity.

By the way, I've never been to Banasch's even though I've lived here for 25 years (!!). I hear that they have great sales - maybe we can all meet up there during a sale for a "PR Day Cincinnati"!

I know, I lived in Cincy for 2-3 years and never went to Banasch's. I always forget about them. Are they good enough to go on an annual buying trip? Once my stash is whittled, I'll have to drive down. Jeffersonville outlets & then fabric shopping. A girl can dream, right?
