I bought a babylock sofia 2 used, but like new never used, for $ 550 and i love it with great stitches and features.

It is a wonderful machine for its size and price point. It has the 4 X 4 hoop and the stitches are beautiful. I use "Embird editor" to design quilt labels or combine lettering with a design. I don't do anything too complicated yet.

It only weighs a bit under 14 lbs without the embroidery unit, so I bring it to quilt class. Even with its smaller size it is nice and sturdy.

Has the push button thread cutter, needle up an down.

The Sofia 2 is a sweet sewing machine, easy to use too. I love having a speed control and thread cutter. Also it has a button for reverse, which you can program to automatically reverse at the start at a seam and at the end of a seam when you just touch it. If you program the scissors, it will also cut the thread after the ending reverse.

Buttonholes are gorgeous and very easy to do, using your button inserted in the space to size them. It is easy to change to the stitch you want and it even tells you what foot to use.

The embroidery is very entry-level with a 4x4 hoop only. If you plan to get into embroidery enough to be designing your own with software, you might consider getting a machine that will do at least a 5 x 7 hoop. The Ellure Plus would be very nice if you can spend more.

As for embroidery software, Floriani Suite or Floriani Total control pro are both great choices for digitizing. Masterworks would be nice as well. If you don't necessarily want to digitize (create embroidery from pictures), you might consider EmbroideryWorks, which allows you to do a ton of editing to existing designs plus add lettering.

It would be nice if you could visit your dealer to see what is available. If you buy from a dealer, you would get classes on how to use your machine and software.

This machine looks exactly like my Brother SE-400, which can be had on Amazon.com for $329.09. I've had mine for a year and use it all the time. It is my main sewing machine and I use it to embroider occasionally. I love it.
