My friend has inherited a Kenmore sewing machine that has the model number 117.301. It's in a 1950's style cabinet but the machine looks much older. The sewing machine repairman said it was older than he was, but as he's only about sixty and the machine looks a lot older I thought I'd ask here and see if anybody knew anything.

Thanks,
Rosie

Sewing machines for Sears were made by different companies over the years and I think that "White" might have been the company that made your machine going by the 117 prefix like the Kenmore's with the prefix of 385 signify's that Janome is the manufacturer. I think Domestic also made machines for Sears around that time too. You might want to check the ISMACS Site for more info about Kenmore machines.

I just got a 117-552 from a neighbor. I was told the 117 just means it was made by white for sears. There are vintage/old kenmore yahoo groups and several posts on here regarding the 117 series. I was thrilled to find that the new cord and foot control was available for mine as the electrics were shot and it has a strange plug into the motor. Mastdenham on here linked me to the replacement. Dh and I worked on it yesterday as the new cords arrived and were a perfect fit. We haven't powered it on yet as I have to make a call about the lamp cord whether it is passable and we need to do the lubrication in the grease cups and below. It has a little different threading than the old singers and to remove the bobbin there is a little lever to press. I would have never figured out either if not for the manual which I think are available online if it is not with the machine.

Mama had a 117.551. It was made in 1938. She's been gone for almost 20 years, but sewed on it right to the end. She probably bought it new, after she and daddy were married.
