2 members like this. Date: 9/9/12 2:28 PM I finished the top, now am trying to make a decision on borders. It's 62" square right now.
I did not plan anything out ahead of time for this quilt. The only thing I knew I wanted was "M"'s and the big monster in a corner.
I decided that all the squares would be 10", because that's what the pre-printed monster squares trimmed down the best to.
The 2 corners that make one large square was a HUGE mistake. I wanted a square center with the strips on all 4 sides. When I figured out the size strips I needed, I forget to divide them to have a strip on all sides, and once they were all cut and one side sewn on, I realized I did not want the print cut into smaller strips, the monsters are too cute. So I improvised. I actually like it!
I have been wanting to try out my circle ruler for a while, and I REALLY love the circles! Will definitley be using that again.
I found a video tutorial on machine trapunto, so I did that on the 8 pre-printed monsters. I have NO IDEA how it will end up, with a mix of both, but FMQ on the little squares was a lot of fun.
I still don't really consider this to be trapunto AT ALL. It was the general idea I was looking for, and for lack of a better word, that's what I'll call it. I think pre-quilted is more of what I consider it. They still need to be quilted with the rest of the quilt. The lady in the tutorial called the pre-quilting part thread painting, and the flower she made was AMAZING.

Date: 9/9/12 2:43 PM I love it, and the "mistakes" really make the quilt! It looks like a modern quilt, which is great, and it has a sense of whimsy which really makes it special! Thanks for sharing these pictures! ------ "Be kind whenever possible. It is always possible."

Date: 9/9/12 6:24 PM I don't see any mistakes in this quilt...maybe not according to plan, but not mistakes, either.
I see some really cool pre-quilted monsters in a super monster quilt.
Great job! |

Date: 9/9/12 6:35 PM Thanks everyone! I have decided that I will add the borders. I have the fabric, and I don;t have anything else to use it for.
I'll add a narrow strip of black, then the monster stripe.
I just ordered the perfect shade of blue cuddle dry microfleece for the back. I have a lime green CDMF already so it will have a cute blue and green back.
He already loves it! He came home and it was on his floor and he wrapped himself up in it already. :-) He LOVES that big monster with the "toof in his mouf" ------ Cathryn |

Date: 9/9/12 7:05 PM First - adorable, and I agree with your grandson, the monster with the tooth is just wonderful.
Second - I would not call it trapunto, either. Prequilted sounds good to me.
Third - excellent fmq, someday I hope mine is that good.
Fourth - I think the big corners balance the big monster perfectly, but if you had added another one in the other corner instead of the little one a huge amount of the life in the quilt would have been regimented out. This is perfect.
Fifth - the sashing adds a great dimension, especially the blue with the black at the corners, but the fewer green ones add a lot of life and movement to the quilt.
I think it must have been a lot of fun to make and I am so glad you showed it to us. ------ Barb |
