Cutting those 2 triangles that make a square piece... help a newbie out, please.

So if you read my "hoarder" thread here, you'll see that I have a massive amount of fabric that is screaming at me to be turned into a quilt. I saw a segment on the online The Quilt Show (it's the freebie episode they are offering right now) ... and the guest was pitching this paper method of making those squares. I don't quite see the need to have to be ripping off paper stitch guides. Am I missing something about this? So how big of a square do you have to cut in half (diagonally) to make the triangles that, when two are sewn together with a 1/4 inch seam, will make an inch or two inch square piece? I remember something from a class I took about cutting squares with an extra 7/8 of an inch for seaming... but don't remember if it is for these. I tried Googling this, and I guess I don't know how to ask the question properly to get a decent answer. ------ nightowlsally.com On my radar someday: Babylock Serger, and some machine for travel. And paper or fabric foundation is used to avoid the bias from going wonky. Try Fons & Porter's Love of Quilting instead of The Quilt Show. The show is on PBS a couple times a week. I set it for record as a series and view whenever I have the time. You can also sign up at their website and get free patterns. I tried The Quilt Show when it was first available and found it irritating. I want techniques and tips and not entertainment. -- Edited on 9/10/12 9:21 AM --

Didn't read it all (racing my PCs battery before it goes flat). You probably would not need a foundation for this type of triangle as you are sewing the bias before cutting. -- Edited on 9/10/12 9:16 AM --

To make HST's you make a square which is 7/8 larger than the finished piece thus: 2 inch squares, make squares which are 2 7/8", and cut diagonally. You do not need paper, and you can chain piece. If you don't know what anything I say is, please ask, I just don't want to bore anyone. To make QUARTER-SQUARE triangles, that is, a finished square with four triangles inside, you add 1.5", thus: 3 inch square, cut squares 4.5", cut diagonally both ways, like an X. There are stitch guides for making both HST's and QST's. One is "Thangles," for HST's, and another is "Triangles on a Roll." I like the latter, and use them all the time. You don't have to use them, and many people don't. I like them because they are quick, and keep me accurate. You can make both types of triangles with them. They are also available through Amazon, but if you buy them from the manufacturer there is no shipping if you spend $25. I love free shipping. Some people prefer Thangles because you can cut a strip 1/2" instead of 7/8" and it is easier. You do not need these guides and many quilters cut beautiful triangles without them. You do need to press your fabric well. There are many quilters here, most more knowledgeable than I, and all are very helpful, you just need to ask. ------ Barb

You can cut your normal ?1/2 in strip to get your half and quarter square triangles. For $5, you get alot in a package that will last you a long time. At first I didn't care for them but the more I used them, the easier it became. There is a system called Inklingo. You iron freezer paper on the front of your fabric, run it through your inkjet printer and you get perfect stitching lines for your half square triangles with dog ears even printed so you can snip them off perfectly. Linda Franz has invented this and I have been doing this since 2006. She has a free set that you can download and try out. MUCH easier. If I am making just 2 from one square set I sew on the diagonal across the center, 1/4" away from the center line. You can either mark the center and sew 1/4 on each side or mark the 1/4 inch lines. I have a little guide that makes it easy. Then cut between the 2 sewn lines. If I am making 4 from one set, I sew around all 4 sides of the square, then cut across both diagonal centers, and you get 4 half square triangles! This does leave bias edges so you have to be careful to PRESS not iron. Half square triangles-sewing all 4 sides of square Half square triangles sewing down the diagonals to make 2 ------ Cathryn
