Just recently I posted that I really wanted to buy another Aurora 450 by Bernina. After careful consideration, what I really want is a new well built mechanical. The decorative stitches are really nice, but I can't see myself using them routinely. I've decided if I ever really want to have them, I'll just buy a stand alone embroidery machine made by Janome. Furthermore, I'm not crazy about computerization. I really like the manual controls. I've looked at the Janome DC5124 reviews and pictures, and it is interesting. I'm sure Bernina makes a great mechanical in the 1008, but it is pricey for what you get. My old Morse is beginning to hum, and become contankerous, and I'm not thrilled at the prospect of searching and digging through all manner of vintage machines. For now, I'm using my old mechanical Elna and the Morse.

This one looks interesting, too, though it is more electronic.

That is like the Kenmore 18621 .... I have the 16321 & I like it.
What about the Janome Sewist .... there are also good reviews on that sm. Or the Janome Magnolia mechanical I have sewn on it & it is a sturdy mechanical with 4 step buttonhole.
I hope you find a sm you will love.

Thanks for the information. I like the HD3000, too. Just wonder if the Sewist has SFS and the 7 piece feed dog. Those are 2 things I love on the Janomes. I'm not really crazy about the accu-feed in the more TOLs.

That looks exactly like the 18221 which I have and did a review on here Kenmore 18221
It is a great machine and is my backup now. Wow that price-$400? I only paid $150. It is probably worth the $400-it is a great machine but I would keep looking. What about the Janome Magnolia line?
Ebay has both the 18221 and the 16231 for less than $100 now. Of course, they will go up in price before the auction is over but they look new in the box. The 16231 has some features that mine doesn't have and I sort of wished I had spent the extra and gotten it.

I know, I'm fickle. I have always wanted to try a Juki, and I've made up my mind to get one by the end of the month. Like I said, I don't need all the fancy-ness, but I want mechanical/electronic with just a few stitch varieties and dependability. Think I'm going with this one from allbrands:

Juki seems to have a great reputation and that is $100 less than the Janomes. Now you will have to join the Juki love thread on here and post a review after you have used it for awhile!

Have you looked at a Pfaff Select? I have a little older one, and it's my favorite mechanical machine. It has built in IDT and can handle any fabric, from swimwear to slipcovers.

Thanks for the suggestion. I'm not sure where my nearest Pfaff dealer is, but I would like to try one.
