Over the weekend I helped a dear friend figure out how to make a wrap for her niece. She had the craft directions from online, but just needed some help figuring it all out. And, she did not have a sewing machine and wanted to know if she could use one of mine until she could borrow one from a family member.

Well, she came over Saturday with some extra fabric, wanting to try a little top for her Zumba workouts...she was so excited and enthusiastic. She carefully cut, sewed and pressed and she was just glowing with pride at her finished top. I just couldn't have been more delighted with my "student". I ended up sending her home with the spare machine, telling her to please keep it as long as she liked. She has since been to the fabric store to buy patterns, fabrics, bobbins and a new pair of cutting shears. She sent me an email last night showing me the new dress she had sewn for herself. She is so excited and I am so proud of her. So many times I have people ask me for sewing help and what they really mean is that they want me to sew it for them. She was so careful and so attentive that it was a joy to watch. She called me today to ask how the 50% coupons work at Joanns. I think I have made a sewing recruit. She sewed some when her daughter was little, but that was years and years ago...

The sweetest thing of all was that she still had her late mother's sewing box, and was using some of the tools and notions from that box. I know her mom was looking down on her and smiling....

What a sweet story! Thanks for sharing this. I will be teaching Sewing 101 at Joann's soon and hope to have some enthusiastic students like her!

I love it because she is absolutely fearless! She is ready to just jump right in and learn everything she can learn. She's not afraid to experiment either, which I admire. What she did in two days, I would take weeks to do, measuring, thinking, basting...she just cut and sewed.

This so reminds me of a very dipsy GF of my DSs who came by with him for a visit a couple of years back. . I was sewing at the time and she mentioned she might like to learn but had never sewn before.
So , I put her in front of my l9606 and showed her how to straight stitch.. gave her some fabric samples to play with and went to change over laundry .
When I returned she had sewn every stitch on the machine I think. in fact she had done her darn name even.. Then she showed ME how to download the manual. sigh
These computer kids are fearless.. and if you think about it .. todays sewing machines are computers that sew..
I was just speechless.. what a natural she would be. She did follow up with making some bags but I have no idea if she is still sewing or not.

Maybe experiences sewing.. both the good but especially the bad has made us a bit more wary of just jumping in doing a project without worrying about it..

Great work on your new recruit, Deb!

I think new sewers are often the most fearless. I know I was (my first sewing project since school was the cloak I wore on my wedding day, which I decided to sew about a week before our wedding)! But the more we learn, the more afraid we can become of the things we know can go wrong.

New sewers also often don't recognise when something has gone wrong with the end result, because of so many years of dealing with ill-fitting RTW, which helps a lot

I'm always glad to read of new people taking up such a useful hobby and hope your friend keeps it up once the novelty has worn off!

She is my best friend, and loves Miss Ginger. In fact, she had some leftover fabric from her little top and she made a bow for Ginger. Ginger is still wearing it, quite proudly in fact, and makes sure that everyone sees it, as you can see here:
Ginger's new bow

I did give my friend a spare machine that had been living in my bedroom closet for the last year or so. It's one of their electronic versions, which I never cared for. She is having a blast with it!
