Not an all-emcompassing how-to-buy video, but it has some valuable information that was interesting. A link to this video on youtube.com was posted on another discussion group that I read. It is 6+ minutes and quite interesting. He never mentions the el-cheapo brand shown.

The sewing machine they are criticizing about is a cheap $149 to $200 Brother sewing machine.

I found it funny how they claim it was several hundred dollar machine at the start and end when the lady being interview said a COUPLE hundred dollars. It's funny how they try and make a big deal over a cheap Brother sewing machine.

I watched it and I thought it was a good video. They never named the BAD brand. The tech sure promoted his Janome business. I could see many machines in the background for sale and a lot of ones he had repaired. I hope business is good for this fellow, as we need dealers, especially honest ones, to stay in business.

I was told when I first started looking at machines to not buy brand X at a certain price point and store, as the insides did not have a metal frame. I listened to that advise, did some research, and bought a nice strong machine. Then another, and another...

I am a Quilter at heart. I love to play with fabrics, patterns and colors. Recently I have discovered I enjoy doing applique. I love making pictures. Using a sewing machine is much easier than counted cross stitch or oil painting for me. I enjoy landscape quilting as well. I am working on my first applique project in the spring of 2014.

So. Instead of kicking the tires, you kick the machine to see if it wiggles?

I have purchased a couple of sewing machines from a "big box" store. They work well and each one cost less than $100.

If they had "broken down" the first day/night in use, I would not have taken them in for repair. I would have boxed them up in their original packaging and taken them back to the store for a refund. You can do that with a 'big box" store.

For those not in "the know", I guess a couple hundred dollars sounds like a lot to pay for a sewing machine. I bet the reporter pays that much each month for touch-ups. MEOW!

My everyday machines cost much, much more than the "big box" Singers I purchased for under $100.

One I purchased to see why the brand is trashed so much. Still haven't found anything negatives with the 1507.

The other is the Simple model and is used for sewing away from home. It's okay.

I prefer my bells and whistles!

I never knew about the lack of a metal frame, until I watched that video. I have seen them on the insides of my machines, and took it for granted that all machines had one. When he wiggled the head of that machine, it got my attention.

I am not sure but I think a while back there was a similar thread to this and I believe it was rumoured that this was perhaps scripted. Don't remember the details but regardless, I feel it is becoming more and more buyer beware.

This video was posted here two years ago. Although it doesn't contain misinformation, it was not meant to be seen by the general public. It's a video Janome produced, I believe, for dealer education. The video was removed from YouTube, though I'm not sure if the dealer who posted it took it off, or if Janome had it removed. Apparently, it's resurfaced...

What he said.

In a way, it's not to Janome's credit to have produced such a video, but it's nonetheless helpful. Face it, that video shows the insides of a typical cheap sewing machine and its utter lack of any kind of frame. Take out the Janome reference, and the repair man is saying, "Get a machine with a real frame," which, of course, costs a bit more.

Yeah, I wouldn't call it intentionally misleading.
And in modern machines... you do get what you pay for. if you buy the Kmart special and expect it to perform line a decent machine.... well, it's not the machine's fault
