This weekends Wall street Journal had an article about designing your own fabric. There is a website called spoonflower.com that will print textiles for you from an uploaded image. There are several different types of ground fabric, from cotton voile to cotton canvas that can be used. I have no affiliation with this company , just think it is neat so I thought I would pass this along.

Yes, the costuming world is abuzz right now, because a designer on Spoonflower has just come out with a line of fabrics printed with the famous fabric design from the portrait of Eleonora de Toledo by Bronzino:

Spoonflower Eleonora

The challenge, of course, is that Eleonora's dress is a richly textured and embroidered velvet, but the Spoonflower fabrics are prints. Still, while I wouldn't make a gown from them, I might certainly be tempted for another purpose--Eleonora-inspired curtains, maybe?!

There was some discussion on this a while back. I have my grandmother's hand scripted recipe cards. I had in mind using some of these to have them produce fabric for apron bodices for family gifts. Some of the handwritten recipes are 70+ years old. Many, her own creations.

The Spoonflower concept is lovely, but please be aware that their prints are not quite as colorfast as some might hope. To avoid disappointment, you might want to try ordering and laundering a swatch or two before investing in a lot of yardage, and/or peruse their information pages for relevant tips (I seem to recall them giving advice somewhere on choosing colors, but it's been a long time).

That said, people have some marvelous designs on Spoonflower, and the ability to design your own fabric is really great.

I am a loyal fan of Spoonflower. I have used them quite a bit in the past year, and cannot gush enough about them. I have not had an issue with the colors running or fading. I do use a phosphate-free detergent.

That is very thoughtful. i'm sure anyone would love to receive those as gifts.

I did order a swatch of spoonflower fabric. I didn't end up making the fabric, but it was pretty cool to see my design arrive on a nice cotton!

It's a little pricey, but I love that the everday person can create their own fabric!

I bought some Kona cotton recently from Spoonflower printed with one of their geek designs for my grandson.

The fabric was wonderful to work with. I don't know how it's held up with respect to colorfast issues. He grabbed his pillowcase and took it home with him.

Their printing process leaves an unprinted border on all four sides of your yardage. That will reduce your total yardage somewhat.

I loved ordering from them and wish I had the funds to get as much as I want of every design I want. I love the concept of being able to design my own fabric too. It's a wonderful company.

You could alsways use the waterproof laminate to iron over the fabric and make it less bleadable or stainable!
