Hand Sewing thread dispenser pulling thread for hand sewing

I'm taking The Couture Dress class on craftsy.com and I'm nearly finished. This dress requires a ton of hand sewing, which I'm really enjoying. My problem is, I'm keeping a spool of thread on my sewing table for the hand sewing and I'm wishing I had some kind of doodad to hold the spool so I can dispense the thread with one hand, without holding the spool. I'm thinking "nail in heavy block of wood" but I really don't want anything that rustic. Anybody ever heard of such a product? Am I making any sense at all? Thanks in advance for your thoughts and ideas.

I used baling twine and was able to hang a paper towel holder. Unfortunately, my sewing table isn't near anywhere I can hang a string. I would take pictures but my sewing room is so trashed I'd be embarrassed. I blame Susan Khalje's dress class. teeeheeee

Can't remember where I got it though and unfortunately don't have a picture. I've seen lots of these sort of threadholders as something more decorative but they work for dispensing the thread too. Joann's has this one: plastic tool/thread caddy. Kind of pricey but it holds everything in one place. You can also make the opening with a heated awl. Or, an unused pepper shaker, the holes are large enough for the thread to pass. The container of choice could lay at your side or hot glued to a saucer. Cute ideas here. I have a couple of those marked vintage. I guess that makes me vintage to! -- Edited on 9/11/12 2:12 PM --

I'm kind of leaning towards the gadget at JoAnn's, I wonder if they have it in the store or you have to order it. The cone spool holder is a great idea, too. Oh, the salt and pepper shaker I could use right now, I have some that I don't use. Thanks so much, y'all! I knew I came to right place to ask that question.
