I don't know how to search the boards, so I apologize if this is a repeat. Can you sharpen serger blades and how so? If not, where can I buy replacements? TIA

They generally cannot be sharpened but they are only a few dollars anyway. Sometimes if there's a little burr it can be polished out (I save those questionable ones for emergencies). Any good repair shop should have, or be able to get, the blades you need.

One of the serger blades for my serger cost 24.95 the other one is a fraction of that cost. I would be interested if you could sharpen them I have save a couple of the 24.95 blades I just tape them to the inside of the drop down cover.

I recently had to buy a top blade for my Babylock Eclipse and was shocked at the price - $45 AU which translates to around $32 US. The dealer said they were twice the price of other blades.

If anyone has a cheaper source for these blades, I would love to know.

Also, is there another brand of blade that fits the Babylock sergers ?

I read recently that most sergers are made by just a few factories in Japan.

Ok, I just googled serger blades so I could see what they look like. The ones I found pictures of were a flat piece of metal.

IMHO, if you're going to throw something away anyway, why not try your hand at fixing it?

Do you have a sharpening stone for your kitchen knives? If you do, you should be able to sharpen a serger blade on it. Just take note of the angle of the cutting edge, and follow the instructions on this site:

I sharpen all my knives on a sharpening stone and it works great...just takes a little time and patience. For what some of these serger blades are costing, it's sure worth a try.

The problem with sharpening serger blades is that the upper and lower blades must fit perfectly together so they cannot be sharpened at the sides. Serger blades do not have an angle as knives and scissors do so you've have to decrease the length of the blade in order to remove the damaged material. Make sense? I think I've only replaced the blades on my serger once in six years.

I can't believe you all are paying so much for blades! I don't think I've ever paid more than $15 for one and that's usually the stationary blade. The moving blade is less expensive.

Gigi, do you have an online source for cheaper serger blades ?

I have never replaced any my Janome, but the Babylock eclipse is another story..the practically new one I had on it, snapped in two as I hit a pin

On my Elna serger, which is about 14 years old, I've never replaced or sharpened the lower blade. It is carbide steel (I think I've got the name right) and, according to my husband, can't be sharpened on a regular sharpening stone. The serger came with two upper blades, both of which have been sharpened, at a repair shop and by my husband. He did a better job than the last repair shop. Gigi is right, the blade must be kept flat, not sharpened at an angle like a knife. So, the sharpening stone must be flattened first. My husband uses a pane of glass for this. He does a good job, but he has lots of experience sharpening everything from knives to chisels to planes to axes... I just wish he would learn to sharpen my scissors.

I'm not sure what new blades for my serger would cost, but my mother-in-law is horrified at the price of those for her slightly older Elna.

WOW they are expensive in AU. My Baby lock dealer only chares about 25.00 for the upper blade and I have had to replace it twice, the first time it hit a pin my fault the second time it was replace with the yearly maintance.

No, I'm afraid I don't. I buy them locally. But there surely must be a good supplier on the internet!

Blades should last for years and years or until you cut through a pin. I hate it when I do that! I try to keep my knives very clean. As with scissors, lint (especially from synthetics) dulls them. I wipe them down with alcohol and then give them a thin coat of SM oil. Of course, it's always good to have a spare movable knife (that's the one that generally goes) for those late-night sewing sessions!
