I need to know the difference between flat line (when you sew the pattern piece and lining piece together as one) and base line? I recently interviewed for a job in the costume dept. of a local college's theater dept and the man interviewing me dropped both of these terms and I have no idea what base line means as opposed to flat line!
Is it when you make the lining separate?
Well, I got the job and start Tuesday! YAY! Dream job for me!
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Sherry

Neither do I. Sounds like he meant underline and interline.

This list of sewing terms defines flat line as the method you mention: the garment piece and lining piece treated as one:

Flat lining - what is it? how to?

Flat lining is sewing with the lining flat against the inside of the outer fabric, at the same time. The seams show inside this way. Victorian bodices are often flat lined, and the raw edges are neatly finished on the inside. [...more on the web page...]

The other type of lining mentioned on this web page is bag lining.

I haven't found a reference to base lining as a sewing term.

ETA: Oooh! Ooooh! I did find a reference to "base" regarding costume making: American Duchess Historical Costume. The way I read this, she's using an internal "base/lining" (as she calls it) and sewing the pleats of this costume to this internal base lining. Does that make sense?

Thanks for the information! I'm going to bookmark the site with the definitions for future reference!
Yes, the base/lining made sense!
