Alvaform studio

Alvaform Studio is a fairly new low end (still $700 plus shipping on sale!) dress form that seems to mimic real female bodies fairly well. About Alvaform I am leaning towards a cheaper setup that incorporates the Fabulous Fit system, but these forms are really lovely. I am wondering if they have any enabling fans here on PR.. ------ Yards sewn 2012: 34 Yards sewn 2013: 13.5 (goal 70!)

But I doubt more than a handful of people on PR would be willing to spend $700 (plus $200 shipping) on a basic dress form that doesn't include features like collapsable shoulders, even if the form is more anatomically correct. Last year, I bought a sturdy PGM dress form on sale for $149, including shipping, from the PGM website. I padded it out to match my measurements and covered it with the Fabulous Fit bodysuits. My total expenditure was about $225, in other words one-fourth the cost of an Alvaform. I guess I thought that in this PR realm of madness where $10,000 sewing machines are not all that few and far between, perhaps there would be some takers for an attractive entry level luxury dress form... Date: 9/16/12 8:33 AM It's true some people on PR have $10,000 sewing machines, but I doubt more than a small fraction of them are serious garment sewers. Many serious garment sewers own reasonably good machines, but they're not spending $10,000 on them. Besides, garment sewing hobbyists don't need a form that corresponds to an average figure. They need a form they can pad out to approximate their own figure, and once you pad the form, the memory foam on the Alvaform becomes a useless feature. Also the lack of collapsable shoulders would be an automatic deal breaker for hobbyists who sew woven dresses. In short, the AlvaForm has features that might appeal to a professional designer just starting out. I really like the aesthetics of this form, but it's true, I'm sewing for myself, not designing for an industry standard. I'm almost close enough to "average" to use one of these, but I'd still need a 34dd bra and perhaps a but around the middle, which would ruin both the form and the function of the Alva.
