I just purchased a 221J. The serial # indicates it was made in 1952. The only other "J" models I can find are tan. I understand these are Canadian machines. Were many made in black? Any information would be appreciated.

I have never heard of a black 221J but I am no expert. According to Nancy Johnson-Srebro, there may possibly have been a black 221K5 but that would be an ES serial number.

How did you date it? All the serial number data for Canadian made machines were destroyed when the St Jean factory was decommissioned. Some of the 221J machines were actually made in Kilbowie, with final assembly completed in Canada. I've never heard of any of these being made in Black.

The woman that owned the machine was British she died at 90 in June. I purchased it from her daughter.

The motor was made in Canada. The serial # is EH379520, which dates it 1951-1953, according to the chart in the Nancy Johnson-Srebro book. I've found no other information.

According to the lists published on the Ismacs site, this serial number was one of 10,000 221Ks commissioned on July 22, 1952 at the Kilbowie factory in Scotland. Lots of Kilbowie machines were fitted with Canadian-made motors for the North American market.

221Js came along much later, after FW production in the USA ceased.

Machine box of accessories is also marked Canada and the book is one of the white,pink,and green editions. Still makes no sense that the machine is marked, 221J and not as a 221K.

How do I contact Nancy Johnson-Srebro ? Is there anyone else that is a Featherweight scholar?

ARRRGH this ipad is driving me crazy!

Let's try this again...black 221Js are not rare, but they're not common, either. I've come across maybe a dozen over the last 3 years, own one. The tag plates were applied in Canada to some FWs with Cdn motors at St. John's.
