Hating my rotary cutter What am I doing wrong ?

It's yellow, but doesn't have anything written on it as for brand. It's quite small too - again, I don't know what size. And the blade must be dull, as it is having a really hard time cutting through just 2 layers of cotton ! Jagged edges, and I can't go around curves for anything :( Back to my scissors I go. After dropping $20 on a mat today just so I could use the rotary cutter :(

Date: 9/15/12 6:49 PM Not saying this is what happened to you...but... when I first got back to sewing a few years ago, I tried using what I thought was a rotary cutter, having never used one before. Took me a little while to realize I was trying to use a tracing wheel (smooth-edged). Silly me

I looked up HA Kidd online, and they're still in business. They have a 28MM cutter (not a Unique). Perhaps if you can replace the blade it would work, but it might just make sense to get a larger cutter. Just realized the mat was from HA Kidd, but maybe the cutter is, too -- Edited on 9/15/12 7:15 PM --

Replace it! What have you been using it on if you only just bought a cutting mat? Whatever the surface was, it has blunted the blade. Buy a replacement 28mm blade. Then you should get smooth cuts, and be able to go around curves easily.

I've had a lot of success buying blades on eBay. Do yourself a favor and buy some new blades and then try it. It does help if you have as large a cutting mat as you have room for, but a rotary cutter should work well for you even if you can only cut a section of a pattern at a time. If your cutter isn't working well, I have to think it's because you need a new blade.

I can understand how it would be frustrating to use. I'm not sure what size mine is but its blade has a much wider radius than the blade of the one you are trying to use and the handle is much more substantial, allowing for a much more comfortable grip. I love it. Much faster than cutting out with shears. Here's a picture. Mine is the 45 mm: Olfa Rotary Cutters ------ I am going for a level of perfection that is only mine... Most of the pleasure is in getting that last little piece perfect...Inspiration is for amateurs. The rest of us just keep showing up and doing the work. You would also probably be happier with a larger cutter. If you have been using it for scrapbooking it is no wonder it is dull and not working. Just like scissors, don't cut paper with your cutter unless you have a cutter dedicated specifically to paper. ------ http://lasewist.blogspot.com/
