Odd noise from machine

I'm having an odd issue with my, very new - May 2012, Brother 1034D. It's starting making a loud, hard to describe maybe swooshing sound?, occasionally. As I'm stitching and not really rhythmic. But startling and quick pretty often - maybe 2 or 3 times in a long seam. Maybe like metal against metal? Not really sure, it's hard to define. I cleaned out all the lint I could find and oiled as per the manual, but it still continues. No change in stitch quality that I can tell, it's still great. It's set/threaded for a 3 thread overlock, and that didn't change from before it made the noise. I have not rethreaded it, I have turned it off a couple of times. I had not just rethreaded before it started the noise, either.
Any suggestions? Anyone else with this?

If it's still stitching the same as before, I would think that this sound is coming from the motor. I'd call or email Brother to ask them. This machine might still be under warranty.

Mine does the same thing!

I got mine in January. I describe it as sort of like the sound of a spring uncoiling. Since the stitching appears consistent, I figured it was just a quirk of the machine. I would be interested in what others say.

That's exactly the sound it makes - I couldn't describe it but when I read your response it was right on. Rather loud and startling when it does it. I got mine at the end of April - I found my registration email for April 27. Now I need to hunt down my serial number and call them. IT just started doing it on Sunday afternoon. I've used it some but not over used it or abused it.

Serial number should be on the back of machine.

A couple of times I thought my old serger was making a noise... One time it needed new needles other couple of times the thread was 'catching' the edge of the thread spool..

The only time I recall my Brother making a loud, startling noise, which frightened me at the time, was after I had disengaged and/or re-engaged the cutting knives. Is it possible that the switch on the left side (for the knife) could have gotten nudged over a bit?
