I am getting back into sewing, and one of the projects I am making to test out machine capabilities is making jewelry pouches. I am using the basic method for felt pouches out of two circles of felt from the Threads video for beginning sewing, but I want to use them as bridesmaids' favors if they turn out ok. Therefore, I want to put satin fabric on the outside of the felt pouches, and I want to put the name or monogram of each bridesmaid in her dress color on her pouch. I had thought that what I would do is to make the outer felt circle 5/8" larger than specified, and make a circle of the satin the same size, sew them together, and then treat them as a unit for making the pouch. (The stitching of the smaller felt circle onto the larger one to make places for the jewelry should hold the larger piece of felt and the satin together, I think.)
I have not embroidered before, but I have a non-embroidery machine with a script alphabet. What kind of stabilizer should I use for the embroidery? The inside of the lettering won't show, since the felt will cover it, so I don't think I care if it is cut-away or tear-away or whatever. I assume that I would stitch the embroidery with a stabilizer before attaching it to the felt, since it would then be a single, flat layer. It is polyester satin, and it is slippery, but it is not a really lightweight satin. I got rayon thread for the lettering. Do I need a special type of needle? Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Use a 75/11 sharp needle. Stabilizer: use a cutaway if it will not show through from the front because it will keep everything smoother. If the satin is white, you might consider using a no-show (fairly sheer) cutaway with a tearaway under that. Tear away the tearaway, then carefully cut around the no-show.

Embroider it before cutting the pouch piece out in case it draws in a bit.

Your idea sounds lovely!

Thank you so much. Just the advice I needed. Great idea to embroider before cutting.
