Hello,
I have a 500A Singer Rockateer and I am trying to find a buttonholer for it. Does anyone have the singer part number for it? Thank you and blessings.

You need the Professional for slant needle machines. These are plentiful and cheap at thrift stores ($3-$5). Be sure it has the #161825 feed dog cover.

You can also use the Singer Automatic Buttonholer # 489500 ( for slant machines). Unlike the Professional, it only comes with 5 buttonhole templates, but it works great too.

edited to add: and as crankyoldlady says, you will need the feed dog coverplate too.

I have a post showing the buttonholer I use with my Singer 503 Rocketeer. HERE I show pictures of what they look like and how they work.

This is the Automatic Buttonholer for slant shank - if you look on eBay, for example, be sure you make sure you are getting the slant shank version not the low shank model.

I have two professionals but they won't work..wrong plate. I tried using a plate that the box said would work but it wouldn't work with the buttonholer. I guess I'm off to ebay.....:) Thank you for trying to help.

Well...I got ta digging in my stash and I found a treasure...a little red treasure box. Just like the one Lisalu talked about on her blog.
I put it on my machine and rock n rolled! I am jumpin with joy..:)
I go to Cleburne County Cares in Heber Springs quite often and I have been picking up these buttonholers for about 4-5 yrs. Finally paid off. I only paid 25.00 for the rockateer about 3yrs ago. A few months back I picked up a 301 there. Paid 7.50 for it. It sews but needs the cord replaced next to the machine and a tune up. It's the short bed. Not so sure I'm gonna keep it.
I appreciate all the help you ladies gave..:)

How cool that you had it in your stash all this time!

Hope you enjoy using it. Just for the record, I usually prefer to drop the feed dogs rather than use the cover plate. In the case of the Rocketeer it is insanely easy since you just switch that lever on the front.

My Rocketeer works differently. The feed dogs do not lower at all. Mine has a rounded throat plate which raises slightly when the lever is pushed to the left instead of having feed dogs that lower.

Yes, yes, you're right. I call it "dropping the feed dogs" but on the 503 it is actually an elevated throat plate. Accomplishes the same thing in reverse. I just say "dropping the feed dogs" from force of habit.

Thanks for clearing that up! :)

So your saying I don't have ta use the plate? When you push the lever to the left and it raises the plate up, you can use it that way? The height that has changed doesn't affect the buttonholer?
I'm gonna try that Thyanks for the tip.
