Could anyone enlighten me about how to remove the cover on my Brother XL3510 mechanical sewing machine? I want to replace the bobbin tire but after removing all the screws, I still can't remove the cover because the stitch width dial is blocking it. I will not take it to be repaired as the labor costs here in France are high and I prefer to put any money toward a better machine. I do have an old Singer straight stitch from the US which winds bobbins beautifully so all is not lost. Thank you for any help.

The machine is made in almost 2 piece clam shell construction. After removing screws there are still hidden plastic tabbies under places. So you would have to find them to remove all the machine panels. And if you really wanted to take the front off the machine, you would have to probably remove the knob first. However, it's a newish very inexpensive machine, and I think just zero chance of any rubber bobbin winder tire in there, if there is even one at all, in having really worn out yet at all. That should take years or decades instead. Instead if your bobbin winder does not work, it's because of something else. What I don't know, but my first guess might be because you somehow managed to get a whole bunch of thread sucked down into it, and maybe that is jamming up all the works in there?

Thank you so much for your input. I agree that the machine is inexpensive (hence my reluctance to repair it) but I was a total beginner when it was offered to me by my family 7 years ago. In France, at the time, it cost more than $200, but has been a good beginner machine. During these 7 years, I have learned a lot thanks to the remarkably generous people on this forum as well as the internet at large, who are willing to share their expertise.

I have also wound a lot of bobbins on it because, in addition to my sewing projects which often include decorative stitches, I have had to unpick a few seams here and there. There is definitely a bobbin tire in there but I hesitate to pry the cover open since it sews well otherwise and my old Singer still winds the bobbins. Also, due to the construction, there is zero possibility of thread being sucked into the mechanism.

I can see that the plastic tabs on the top of the cover are free and it is basically just the seam width knob preventing the removal of the cover. The problem is that the knob is recessed into the front panel. I can't find any way of removing it. After searching the internet for hours I have only found 2 applicable references to this type of clamshell cover. They both mention prying the cover loose with screwdrivers. I don't know what to try, but I am not willing to spend $80 for "repair" on this sewing machine.

Update: My husband removed the front cover for me and replaced the bobbin winder tire. Now it works great!
