Hi everyone. I've been watching the shopping channels and see some great looking slim ponte pants with elastic waistband for sale. Seems pretty easy, though I haven't found a lot of patterns for this look.

However, I am working on a pair of fleece pants simplicity 2289 that seem to be similar...any reason why I can't use ponte, though it's not mentioned on the pattern? Any tips?

And does anyone know the reason for the crotch "smile", back and front?

Thanks for any advice!

I made ponte yoga pants. They're great and I can wear them to work.

Exactly what I'm hoping for: comfortable, yet looks unlike sweats!

Peggy Sagers did a great webcast about making her yoga pants in various materials:
Here

I'm no fit expert, but I think that any smile in front of the pants needs to be fitted in the pattern, and can't be fixed once the fabric is cut. You should take a little dart in the front which tapers to nothing in the side. Peggy demonstrates it in the webcast

Did you wear them for yoga? I wonder about the them being hot for exercise.

If this is the "smile" I am thinking about, then it means the seat is too shallow for you. But without a picture it is hard to tell.

Peggy Sagers has the pant you're looking for. She calls it the yoga pant. she makes it with Ponteroma and it's 3 pieces. front back and waistband. The pattern is $14 but she does have sales. she has a video about 45 minutes long that shows the pant and how she makes it. among others. She's a good teacher and will answer any emails you send her.

Silhouette patterns. she does a live webcast every other week wherein you can ask questions. she then saves those for people who couldn't watch and she has pages of previous webcasts. I think you'd enjoy both the pattern and Peggy. I have that yoga pant. I'm tall so I have made a couple pairs as muslins, but need to figure out the best way to get the waist where I want it. They are comfortable and depending on the fabric, you could wear them just aobut anywhere. I just saw Ponte at Vogue Fabrics in Chicago for $3.99yd. It takes about 2-1/2 yards. inexpensive - fast, and nice!

good luck

forgot to mention. Peggy goes into the fitting aspect on her video. the smiles' usually mean the rise isn't right. She details the 3 dimensions and how they affect the fit. I download her videos with my realplayer so I can watch them on my tablet. I don't know which version I have, but it works great for getting them onto my computer. I guess not everyone has had the luck. but at any rate - you can watch them online whenever you want.

I too have made and wear the Silhouette Patterns a lot. I made one with 2" elastic and discovered I much prefer 1 1/2 " elastic so I decided to use those 2" elastic ones as running pants. I wore them in the winter until about May. I'm a casual neighborhood jogger so we're not talking about sprinting or marathon training here. They worked great for that.
