What kind of fabric should I use?

There are nylon and cotton fabrics that are'downproof' The cottons are sometimes called ticking. ------ My grandmother taught me to sew when I was 10, and I've been sewing ever since.

Failing that, look in dept. stores for pillow protectors that are feather and down-proof. You can either just use those with the zipper, or sew it slightly smaller and cut off the zipper. Usually, by the time the pillow fabric is that work, the feathers are somewhat crushed and worn, too, so a smaller pillow may actually end up being the height you want. When I made buckwheat hull pillows, I used the protectors, and left the zipper so we could adjust the filling.
