hello all! new here but I've been reading and I love this site!

I'm looking to buy a new sewing machine. I've been using a Simplicity model s-02 for years. don't laugh! It's been a great machine! :-) the 1 I'm looking at now is a Sears Kenmore model 1803. I've read some good stuff about it, but I'm not sure price wise if this is a good deal. it comes in a cabinet, which I know many people don't like, but that would be perfect for me. the gentleman that I'm buying it from turned it on and push the pedal and said it works but doesn't know anything about it. he said it comes with accessories, which I'm guessing are the cams. he's charging $45.

here are a few pictures of it. Any feedback you have for me would be greatly appreciated!

thanks!
Jen

Bring thread and fabric. It should have a bobbin. See if you can get it to sew. If it sews, even if you have to fiddle with the tension, grab it and run; $45 is a fabulous deal for that Kenmore. If it works. Make sure you can test drive it.

This is similar to my old Kenmore and it looks in pretty good shape. My old girl is still going strong after 30+ years. This might be a good machine. Parts are around as there were alot of these. $45 is probably a good price if it is works well. Take some fabric and see if it sews ok. HTH

That is a great, great deal....and just looking at the pic, I don't see any yellowing of the tension dial or feed dog drop lever.

MAKE SURE YOU TEST WINDING A BOBBIN! This machine has the button you push down on the top that engages the bobbin winder mechanism. Sometimes, these are a little fussy, but a very easy fix. And don't be put off it the motor or innards sound a little rough. It probably hasn't been oiled in years and once the babies get a fresh oiling, they run very smooth.

Even if it didn't come with all the accessories, I think $45 is a really good deal. These machines are work horses and can be fixed relatively easy and the maintenance is not hard. You can get the monogrammer, cams, etc on eBay for a song most of the time.

Go for it!

I love my old Kenmores. I have 3, one similar to this one that I learned to sew on 40 years ago. It still runs beautifully, is easily repaired, and is an absolute workhorse. Does this one come with cams?

I think $45 is a great price.

I would have to agree with other posters... a very good price for the Kenmore. I too like Kenmore's, nice sturdy, & a great stitch.
I hope you will like it.

Yes about checking the bobbin winder. My mom had one that I bought her after I bought mine. I don't remember what model but hers did not have the cams. It looks like this too and the clutch (I think) that disengages to wind the bobbin kept breaking. My mom had it fixed multiple times and it kept breaking. She ended up winding bobbins on her other machine. The problem did not affect the stitching only the bobbin winding.

well, I'm going to look at it tomorrow! I sent the guy a picture of what cams look like and he said he didn't think there were any of those. I know I've seen them on ebay for really cheap, so if it works okay I think I'm going to grab it! :-)

can anyone tell me if you have to have cams for your exact model or if just Sears Kenmore cams will fit?

You don't have to have the exact cams that came with the model, but you need to make sure you have the right cams. Kenmore has several different styles. Most are round and look like little top hats. They come in a variety of colors as well.

The cams for this particular machine are called the "C" cams. These are the most popular and you can find them on eBay all the time..and I mean, ALL the time. They come in a greyish green color, some are orange, some are cream, but they're all the same and they all work. The only ones that won't work are a specific set of C cams made for model 1980 that have some sort of magnet on the bottom.

The 158 models made in the late 60's through the 70's all use the "C" cams and they can be used on any 158 machine made during this time. There are other styles that were used for 158 machines prior to this. I don't believe Kenmore had any additional style made past these C cams which is why you see them all the time. The machines these belong to were manufactured for more than a decade and were very popular, hence the fact they are easy to obtain.
