Date: 9/27/12 1:19 PM I sew clothing, piece quilts and hope to start doing my own quilting. I have seriously studied at the dealers and online Janome Horizon, Viking Husqvarna sapphire 875, Brother Laura Ashley NX 2000, also some of the Pfaff and Baby Lock. A lot of review on this site are several years old. I am looking for up-to-date information and motherly advise. |

Date: 9/27/12 2:43 PM Have you read the thread devoted to the Janome Horizon? I have a Janome 6600 that I really like. I haven't any experience with the others but I think there have been more recent reviews of these. Under Sewing Machines you can do an advanced search by price and features. |

Date: 9/27/12 7:17 PM Probably not getting many answers bc so many are happy with each brand you mention. There are a LOT of janome users and definitely the Brother/BabyLock is wonderful too. There's a new Pfaff Creative Performance that is amazing and you can buy it without embroidery. The Expressions have been hit-n-miss and I don't read/hear much re the Sapphires. I don't think you can possibly go wrong with Janome/Elna/Brother/BabyLock/Bernina. Narrow the field to two if you can...then come back and you will get lots more help choosing (if you need it). |

Date: 9/27/12 9:43 PM I have the Elna Excellence which has an 11 inch harp which makes Free Motion Quilting a little easier. It is like the Janome Horizon. A couple of things I find that make my sewing a little more efficient is needle up/needle down, built in needle threader, auto tie off and thread cutter. Before I got this Elna I did not realize how much I would like these features and now cannot do without them. Also the Elna Excellence and Janome Hoizon have a dual feed which is great for quilting. It is nice not to have to use a walking foot to quilt. ------

Read reviews here. Even though some are older that doesnt mean the machine has changed, so it gives you a good idea when reading a bunch of them, what to look out for.

Once you have a great machine you are not going to replace it any time between soon and ever.
I go with my own choice by visiting dealers and trying out the machines that fall within my sewing preferences.
Then, I buy from the dealer with whom I feel the most comfortable.
Take a list of those things you want to make with you to the dealers. Try out the machines. Include making buttonholes and blind hemming.
Then, you can make your own decision.
