antique handcrank what needle?

Before I let SMAD enter my life again I was hoping the more knowledgeable could tell me what needle this would likely take? If you go to look at it, take some regular needles with you and compare them to the needle in the machine. Make sure that there is a shuttle and at least one bobbin with the machine, and that it actually sews--take a spool of thread and a bit of fabric along. It looks like a singer clone of sorts looking at its thread path and appearance. I would look at what needle was in it if that was a concern -if it is flat shank probably a household. Maybe take a screwdriver of both types so you can take it out for a look. My singer treadle has those double cover plates like the one you pictured and it has the bullet vs style bobbin and uses the flat needle 15x1 household type. I passed on a really beautiful coffin cover universal with a handcrank as I didn't know anything at all about the old machines when I looked at it. It was wayyy prettier than the 99K with a handcrank I eventually bought. Any one with SMAD would grab this one in a heartbeat. Lol!

I will definitely bring stuff to try whether it is working. Take a look at this site, at the CWS Federation about half-way down the page -- www.sewmuse.co.uk/jones5.htm Now, as to the needles it takes, I think you're on your own! Hopefully there is a working needle in it that you can compare to a modern one. I am fairly sure that some older Jones' take a round shank, but fingers crossed this one takes a modern one. It looks gorgeous, and if I were in your area I'd be trying for it too! Karen

There may be a common modern equivalent, but I have no idea what it would be. I traded my only Jones years ago for a Singer industrial treadle base... Jennifer in Calgary

Date: 10/1/12 7:48 AM My mother has a very old hand-crank machine that takes a round shank needle. Her local sewing store was able to use a needle that came with the machine to match up a modern needle size that works fine. I think it was a serger needle. Not to encourage SMAD, ahem, but we have an antique handcrank (Frister and Rossman) and love it silly. It sews a beautiful stitch and is easy to control. It is surprisingly fun to sew with. Non-sewers who visit my house pay no attention to the regular sewing machine but will sit down and play with this one. It seems less intimidating and is much easier for my kids to use than our treadle or regular machine. I use it a lot.
