I will be in Italy the first week of November and would love to visit some fabric stores in Rome,Florence and Venice. In the states i gravitate toward those places with remnant or sample bins and would prefer the same in Italy if possible. I have researched google but many of the web sites for fabric stores are several years old.

I would not know such a place but others may chime in.

In Rome, I'd highly recommend visiting Fratelli Bassetti Tessuti at Torre Argentina: The most amazing fabric store I've ever seen! 5 large rooms with huge metal shelves and thousands of bolts of fabric! One room with shirting material, one wth wools, one with silk & evening fabric, ... It's wonderful just being there. Prices are not cheap but the quality is outstanding. Across the street is another large shop (though not as large as Fratelli) that's a tad cheaper.

Enjoy your trip!

I lived in Italy for a year (a long, long time ago) and you already know their textiles are incredible.

From the little bit I know, Lake Como is a great textile destination. I'm not sure if it's retail though or geared more to sell to retailers (wholesale). I owned an online internet fabric business for a few years; it never really took off but I got to learn a bit about the fabric business.

Others may know more but may I just say how insanely jealous I am. I cried when I had to leave Italy. It's a truly amazing place.

I still had this in my email from a friend who went over to Italy last May.

Bassetti Tessuti is Rome's largest fabric store. They have everything from garment fabrics to home decor stuff, I got lost in there for about 3 hrs on my last trip to Rome. Their competitor is http://www.aziendatessile.it another garment haven.

Linens - http://www.jesurum.it/ its a MUST SEE in Venice. Listed below are other textile places in the Venice Area:

Jesurum (two stores)
Fondamenta de la Sensa, 3219 - Cannaregio
Phone: +39 041 524 25 40

Piazza San Marco, Procuratie Nove, 60 et 61 - San Marco

Frette
Calle larga Ventidue Marzo, 2070A - San Marco

Finally, to find splendid velvet cloth including the famous Fortuny fabric, go to:

Venetia Studium (two stores)

Phone: +39 041 522 98 59

Calle Larga XXII Marzo, 2403 - San Marco

In Italy, there is a chain of remnant stores called Giesse Scampoli. Their stores tend to be in strip malls a bit outside of town. Here is their list of locations.

This chain has been discussed here at pr, and a search should turn up more info.

I have been to a Giesse Scampoli location in Italy.... Also there is a a hogh end group ca ole Valli in Rome, Florence and Venice. Expect to pay $100 euros up for gorgeous fabrics that Marfy has featured in their patterns. Rome has a store on Via Condoti upstais that sells to designers.

Scampoli translates to remnants....but I bought off the bolts.

There is an Etro outlet in Milan which I really enjoyed.
