a little lesson learned just to share a laugh

Date: 9/29/12 6:27 PM I have some lovely polka dot silk/cotton fabric left over from a previous project. I thought it was too pretty to leave in my cupboard. So, when going through my patterns recently I remembered I had one with a knicker option (panties for some of you!) and thought why not use it for that. The style as my sister would say are "apple catchers" i.e. full rear coverage. Looking at the pattern pieces my initial reaction was that they looked well, roomy. Perfect I thought, I can use my non stretch silk cotton mix fabric. It recommends tricot. Please don't shake your head too violently at this point. So, I cut out my pieces, and start sewing. I try on the elastic when I get to the bit where you add it to the waist. I wanted to double check the size for comfort, yup, perfect. After attaching the elastic I eye up my knickers. They still look huge. I try them on. After getting to my hips it dawns on me the reason for the stretch required in knickers is not just for fit. Its also to help get them past your naturally bigger hips. After doing a concerted wiggle to get them past hips I finally got them up to where they should be. They no longer looked huge. Lets say this is an object lesson in why unless an underwear pattern says you can use a woven only fabric, best to stick to stretch options in future. And yes, I did finally manage to take them off.

I might just keep them as a demonstration example next time I see her. In the mean time I thought you might like to all see the knickers in question.
