Washing silk dupioni
Will it hold up?

I love the look and feel of washed dupioni, but haven't had experience with how it holds up over time. I am thinking about binding a baby blanket with it.
Anybody know how that will weather the washing?
Thanks!
ETA: I just hate to make it for a friend and have it fall apart within a few months!

It does hold up quite well...BUT...color fastness may be an issue.

I've got a couple of silk dupioni garments that I machine wash and dry. It doesn't get the wear and tear of a baby blanket. So far it still looks great. The initial wash did take away that classic iridescent shine but no change after that. I did buy my fabric from The Silk Baron who up until recently only sells silks mostly dupioni. I can't say that all silks are the same quality.

Maybe you put a swatch in with the normal laundry a few times and see how it performs.

I'd throw a color catcher sheet in the wash with it - silk dyes often run in the wash.

Somewhere on the boards here there's a long discussion of how someone washed dupioni prior to sewing that might also be helpful to read.

You might make a double binding (like you'd use on a quilt) and cut the silk on the bias. That would hold up better.

I bet a baby would love the mixed textures of silk and the blanket fabric.

I'm not so sure how it would hold up over years of use (remembering how I loved my old baby blanket for years) but I'm sure it would be ok for a while. To me it would be worth it to have something so unusual and luxurious. I say go for it!

Silk is very strong; I wouldn't worry about wear.

EXCEPT that silk is also susceptible to damage by chlorine bleach (alkalines) and extensive sunlight exposure.

So...it's up to you. Personally I love your idea.

But you might want to give a warning about chlorine bleaching...

Thanks, everyone, for your input!
I am going to prewash everything( love color catchers!) and go for it!
Yes, I was planning on cutting bias strips for the binding.
I am aiming for a more unique, luxe gift...but of course want it to be durable. Don't know if it will be durable enough for decades, but I would consider it a success if it lasts beyond the first 2 years.
