2 members like this. Date: 10/2/12 1:07 PM I got call that Microsoft had gotten warnings about my computer sending out viruses and that needed fixed or I would be off the web. I bought it, I got charged $140 and they took my puter over. When I refused to send another $140 via Western Union to the PERSON not the compnay, I said forget it. But they crashed my computer, even deleting the software originally installed on my machine and all the photos from the first two years of my great grandson's life as well as cleaning out the backup system.
I am so "not" the gullible type and yet I got taken. I cancelled the credit card, warned my bank and otherwise screamed in fury since my Geek squad policy does not cover recovery ...that is extra $100. So the money I got critiquing Joanne ETC signage went to the Geeks so they can get my computer back up and hopefully, get the photos back.
We had been doing regular backups, so I don't know how the evil ones managed to empty that, too. So, if anyone calls you to say that Microsoft notified them because of Mallware that needed removed because it was sending error messages to everyone else I contacted DO NOT BELIEVE THEM. I feel dumb enough, but my DH showed me an article in a paper about an 89 year old woman who was NOT taken in, I knew I hit bottom. ------ JanieV |

Once my husband got the call and told them we have a Mac and the caller didn't quite know what to say. Yes, beware of these scammers!!! ------ strikesmyfancy-2013.blogspot.com

Date: 10/2/12 2:19 PM The family computer guru has me back up on a portable external hard drive. You could ask The Geek Squad about this.
Don't beat yourself up, I'm sure you feel terrible enough about your grandson's photos.
I would imagine that no one needs phone numbers. Chances are that any phone list or any random dialing would yield a high percentage of households with Microsoft users.
This reminds me of the lightbulb sales people with no light bulbs. We still have folks show up to 'sell' magazines with no visible way to record sales. They just show up empty handed. The police department has asked that we call when this happens.
Good rule of thumb, if you don't initiate the contact, do not respond; phone, email, or text.

3 members like this. Date: 10/2/12 2:42 PM People, first ask yourselves how Microsoft would know that your computer had viruses. Second, how would Microsoft know your phone number?
You could always end that conversation with "Thank you for letting me know. I'll run my anti-malware/anti-virus software now." I like the "We have a Mac " answer also.
Hopefully, things will be back to normal soon for you. ------ I have not yet begun to procrastinate |

Please be aware, if you gave a total stranger remote access to your computer, then they had access to any info you had stored in that machine i.e. bank acct #s, credit card #s, your email contact list etc etc.
There is only one person in the world that I allow to remote access my machine. We own servers and host other peoples servers and have a partner in our company that is also our computer tech. He now lives in another state, and if we have computer problems we do let him remote access our machines. I know him well and trust him completely, no one else would I let do that. |

I work in IT and think I'm knowledgeable. But occasionally I still hesitate over the latest "official" warning about something that I just need to click on the provided link.
I know not to do it. But they are so good at it.
When my mother was older - I coached her and coached her on not sharing any information over the phone to anyone who called her. She knew she was supposed to call them back at a number she had looked up. (if it were the bank or whatever).
Anyway - I knew the message had gotten thru when she answered the phone, said 'I'll have to call you back', hung up the phone, looked up a number in her little address book, dialed the phone and then said "Pastor Lind, I'll be at the dinner Sunday". She wouldn't RSVP to the minister because it could be someone wanting to know when the house was empty!!!!
Better safe than sorry. I still laugh when I think about it. |
