I have been having off and on pain for a few weeks, and while I could manage most of the time, I'd occasionally have terrible twinges in my left side. I could tell my ribs were affected, as it hurt to breathe. Yesterday evening I went for a sunset ride with old Woodrow and he spooked by the canal (nothing new), almost dumping me and tweaking my ribs even more.

This morning I went to the dr, and he said I have this condition-costochondritis. The good news is that it isn't serious, but damn, it hurts. Sympathy gratefully accepted.

I'm sorry -- what is it exactly? What causes it?

Marec.. so sorry about the way you are feeling.. but I am like Harriet.. have no idea what it is.. In fact I first thought you spent too much time in Costco and made a typo.
We are here if you care to share anymore info.. or want to vent a bit more.. Hope you get to feeling better soon.

You have my sympathy. I get this every few years, too, and it really smarts!

No one knows for sure what causes it, but sometimes it seems to be linked to overuse; competitive rowers get it (but I'm not one of them).

Here's an illustration of the area involved, and here's a rather lengthy explanation. But it's a nice one.

Mine goes away with concentrated use of advil for a few weeks, and a little caution on the ab machine when I get back to the gym.

If you google something like 'anti inflammatories costochondritis', you will find some indications that some components of these medications may actually help cartilage heal itself. This tissue has rather poor vascularization, and advil might--might--hasten healing.

For those interested in words, 'costo' is from Latin words having to to do with coastlines, shores, things that stick out, or 'ribs.' 'Chondro' has to do with cartilage. 'itis' means inflamed. Here's more.

That just sounds painful, marec... Hopefully you will be able to deal with the pain perhaps through ibuprophen or something similar. It's lousy when you pull or twist something and have to wait it out... This seems worse to me. Hang in there.

Marec, I too am sorry to hear you are in pain and also have never heard of this condition. I hope it goes away quickly and you can be back up on Woodrow. (I used to ride too, years ago, and still really miss it).

Me too, all my sympathy. Is it ok to add that at first I thought this problem might be brought on by spending too much time at Costco? Then I found this entry: wiki; feel better!

Oh, man! I have bucket loads of sympathy for you. Is it in the area of the illustration? Other than the top and bottom it looks like it would be impossible to ice or use arnica gel or anything.

Does it hurt even more when you breathe?

I know it is going to be really difficult to remember not to aggravate the situation. Time to read?

Best wishes on a speedy and full recovery.

I hope your horse is okay.

So sorry you are hurting. I hate getting things that have no known cause or cure.

Oh my! I never heard of this and thanks to Elona, I now know. Can you take anything for it, such as a heating pad, warm compresses, etc?
