Date: 10/7/12 4:03 PM Hi everyone,
I've looked several times online for fashion fabric to purchase online in Canada, but haven't been able to find a good source - in the past, I have purchased from both Fabric Mart and Fabric.com, but shipping has always been in the $30-$40 range. I have simple needs: solid cotton jersey for tops and dresses, mainly. The occasional US order for fancier stuff is fine, but it would be nice to be able to order a couple of meters of a basic fabric without feeling like I need to make it worth my while by purchasing more than I need.
Any ideas?

Date: 10/7/12 7:38 PM I was going to suggest Wazoodle, but apparently they've been purchased by new owners based in New Jersey. Hopefully that'll improve the service problems they've had the last few years, but since they're no longer Canadian-based that doesn't help with your query. ------ I've moved! Date: 10/7/12 8:15 PM Thanks, Laura - I checked Wazoodle and didn't see any mention of their location but did see that they ship using Canada Post. I'll probably email them.
I did a little more browsing and came across this list:
Canadian mail order sources
It led me to www.distinctivesewing.com and I ordered a couple of interesting knits:
Grey rag double knit
red houndstooth
I plan on making V1315 - while I like its simple lines, a solid knit may be just too boring...

Date: 10/8/12 11:48 AM Thanks -- but........ Warning: one of those suppliers doesn't seem to be what it appears to be (HAKA -- something to do with sewing furniture, whatever that means). If you hit the translator button -- I don't think it's just a bad translation -- well, let's just say the word libido and skin appear quite often... It's not exactly dreadful, but totally unrelated, and I'm really wishing I hadn't clicked the link.
I'm going to stick to shopping at Fabricland.

Date: 10/8/12 11:54 AM There are three problems with Fabricland, IMO: the quality leaves something to be desired, the prices are high and the locations are all inconveniently located enough so that I practically have to take an afternoon off to schedule a trip... and don't get me started on their paid memberships!
Sorry about that link - I hadn't bothered clicking on the translate button. -- Edited on 10/8/12 11:55 AM -- |

It's not your fault -- the name of the company just sounded interesting, so I checked it out. Maybe their site got hacked.
The Fabricland where I live is really good, IMO -- much lower prices than online, and very well run. But I know they can vary.

Date: 10/8/12 12:23 PM We have 3 Fabriclands here and they are all horrible -- the staff are rude and would rather stock shelves than wait on customers. I've been avoiding them for over a year -- didn't have a membership this year and haven't missed it. The last time I was in there to buy a spool of thread to finish a project I had to hunt down a staff person to put me through the till -- after I rang their service bell (I was the only customer in the store and there were 3 staff people stocking notions).
I am lucky to have several independents locally although they are all further away than 2 of the Fabriclands. It takes a little more planning but I personally don't need the aggravation of shopping at Fabricland.
stitchie77, you could try Peak Fabrics in Calgary -- they carry a pretty good variety of stretch and technical fabrics and they quality is very good (they often have roll ends from designers/athletic wear companies).
