Silhouette -- Choosing a size No idea which to pick

Date: 10/10/12 11:41 AM I picked up a copy of Silhouette's current pattern of the month Craig's Blouse as it closely resembles a RTW blouse I owned years ago that I really liked. Today I was looking at the sizing and was baffled as to which to choose to make a muslin. I know the measurements on the pattern envelope are the finished garment measurements, but what I am not clear on is what the bust measurement IS, given that you are encouraged to choose from those measurements to pick your size and THEN choose from the ABCD cup sizes, for which measurements aren't given. Is the "bust" measurement on the back of the envelope actually the high bust measurement? (Also, there is very little more annoying than the Silhouette webcasts telling us to "measure your favourite RTW blouse to get the right size!". If I had a blouse that fit well, I wouldn't be trying to make one.) ------ http://sewingnovice.blogspot.co.uk/ One woman. One sewing machine. One giant stack of fabric. What could possibly go wrong?

The pattern is sized by garment measurement. I am very large busted (H) and I like to add only 1" for bust ease. When using a knit I pick the same measurement as my bust, but I am over 50 and don't like tight clothes. My daughter uses 2 sizes smaller when using a knit. We have had great results with this pattern company. ------ 61sew4fun

None of them are the same, so you can't go from pattern to the next with the same size. I have tried several times, and they are all too small so far, even with ease. I would really appreciate more detailed comments on how to size or I will probably just give up on her line of patterns. Each pattern lists the measurements of the finished garment. Don't go by the "bust" measurement as measures to your own. Go by your bust measurement + ease, and pick your cup size. Remember her seam allowances are 3/8". Then go to the thrift store and try on blouses or similar style garments. Measure the one with a circumference you like and write it down. Measure the armscye of it too and write it down. Pick the size with the right circumference, correct cup size and then alter the armscye to match the correct length of that on the pattern.

No, you won't be able to effectively, because of the types of fabric used for the pattern. For example, a knit fits a little more tightly, (known as "negative ease) so you'd use a smaller size. What I do when working with a knit, is I wrap the fabric around me (like a towel) under my arms to where it fits like I would want it to and then measure that amount. Then I compare this measurement to the pattern and use that size; sometimes it's a 4, sometimes it's a 3, depending on the type of knit When working with a woven, I do the same, but I leave it a little more loose. If you want to find out how to fit these patterns, wrap the fabric around you, and let it flow a little, giving it ease. Measure this amount and choose the pattern by that number. The hardest thing I had to learn to do with these patterns was to stop looking for a bust measurement and go with the actual measurement of the garment. I too didn't have anything that fit right, and then I bought her Sweater set--a knit only type of pattern. Then she showed (on some webcast) how to wrap the fabric around you and then measure the fabric. You'd be surprised as to how accurate this turns out! I find her sizing confusing, but I like some of her patterns very much, so I put up with the inconvenience. ------ A balanced diet is a cupcake in each hand.
