My mom's birthday is in a week (!), and the gift my dad's been planning has fallen through. He's on the hunt for an emergency replacement, and I'm hoping the PR family might have some good suggestions.

A bit about my mom: She's a retired woodworker/antique refinisher, who is very handy and did all the DIY home improvement and repairs at our house growing up. She recently injured her shoulder lifting heavy weights in her gym class. She's active in her university women's club and PEO, loves her Kindle and her iPod, doesn't do any sort of textile hobby *at all,* loves dogs, and has traveled a lot. Spends a lot of time working on her yard and plantings, although she wouldn't consider herself a gardener. She loves jewelry, purses, Coldwater Creek, and Chico's (she is a petite)--but probably has plenty of "stuff." (Garage sale and auction nut, with a ton of collections of various things.) They're currently more in a downsizing mode. She's an extrovert; Dad's an introvert.

*My* gift, if it helps, is an engraved commemorative paver at the university in my hometown (she went there for undergrad and grad school), all her kids went there, her dad taught there, my dad taught there, now she's in the woman's club... etc. :)). It seemed like it struck just the right 70th birthday significance, without being more stuff to find a home for.

So. Any suggestions for dear ol' Dad? Something he can find in a hurry?

Thanks a bunch!!

Our local zoo does encounters with the cheetahs, red pandas or a behind the scenes tour.
Got my DS an encounter with the cheetahs for his birthday - he loves cats. He really loved it.

It's kind of indelicate to ask, but necessary: How much does your father want to spend?

Dinner at a good restaurant, followed by a visit to a jewelers where she could choose something she likes?

A ring with a birthstone representing each son or daughter's birthday.

Jewelry is always good.
Or a Spa Day.

For my Mom's 90th birthday a few years ago, I gave her a DVD of many of the important pictures in her life. My son-in-law made it with me and it was completed in time for her birthday, but your dad could give her a gift certificate from a local business that does that kind of thing and she could then choose the pictures and the background music. We started off with pictures of her parents, then pictures of her as a child and went on to pictures of her and my dad, their children as babies, me and my siblings marriages and families, grandchildren (12) and finally great-grandchildren (23). I collected all of the pictures, entered them into the computer and worked with my SIL on chronological order and choosing music. We picked Barbra Streisand singing "Memories", Frank Sinatra singing "Young at Heart" and a Beetles song, (Sorry, can't remember the name). When it was done, my SIL made many copies and we passed them out to all family members. The last time that I saw my mom, just before she passed away, we sat and watched it together and talked about many of the pictures. What a nice memory for me. I am so glad that I did this. It was a nice gift for all of us. It took us a while to do it and cost about $70, however, we did all of the work, so having it done professionally would cost more.

Oh, this is fun to think about!

An iPad. That would be downsizing her from the Kindle and iPod. Your mom could check her email anywhere and socialize; look at a beautiful display of photos- of her birthday celebration!, and show them off to everyone. It's great for mapping out destinations for travel and saving all that for later reference. It's an amazing research tool and way to find things away from home. After her big day, your mom and dad could look online for a fabulous carrying case/bag to make the gift more snazzy.

My mom is 90 and waffling about wanting one! However, she kind of likes bossing me around on my iPad and has me doing her bidding. She's not the introvert; that'd be my dad who's 92.

Omg, a 60+ yr old female relative of mine has iPods, an iPad, a Kindle, a Kindle Fire, a desktop Mac and a MacBook Air. And she's mostly a homebody. I told her she needs a smooth action frame that drops down from the ceiling over her bed and keeps all her devices perfectly arranged at her fingertips.

I like the idea of something like a digital and/or print photo album, family tree, mother's jewelry...

Your gift is great! What an amazing family legacy.

Thanks, everyone! Keep the ideas coming!

Carolhope, it's funny you should mention that, because my dad is a videographer. He's a retired journalist/journalism professor who taught TV news and video editing, and that's what he does now--lots of short documentaries and film/photo montages. But they do take him MONTHS. I'm not sure he can get one done for Mom in a week. LOL

I know that what she *really* wants is for my dad to go out and do more things with her. But I'm not sure he's ready to hear that. (shrug)

It may be too late, but here is another idea. I just got a present that is really cool - a leather cover for my ipad. Maybe there is one for a Kindle too. Check out Oberon Design for more. At first I was not sure I needed something like that as it is a bit heavy but have grown to really enjoy how it feels like a book in my hands and the beauty on the outside.
