I have a design I want to embroider and then frame. I wonder what is a good fabric, in white, that is readily available for this purpose. I was thinking felt because I can't really get good cotton in my area. I only have JoAnns and hobby stores in easy reach.

I think I used backing wrong. I meant a top fabric to sew the design on not the stabilizing fabric; for stabilizing I thought to use a cutaway that would not be cutaway.

For designs I'm framing I use white or beige canvas.

What weight, please? I always think of canvas as being very heavy.

Not sure what you mean by weight. Just the canvas they sell at Joanns. Not like sail weight. I like it cos it's firm for dense designs and for a framing isn't going to be washed. Also don't wash it before use or you will have a wrinkled mess. The heavier the cloth you embroider on the less chance of wrinkling around the designs which of course is rather noticable.

I bought a few yards of JoAnn's poly/cotton Target bottomweight. Next time I go I will buy some felt and then I can do a compare. I haven't tried embroidery in a long time and much of my knowledge is outdated and new products have appeared.

Thanks to all for the help.
