Date: 10/12/12 10:24 AM Help, I'm looking for a new machine. My local dealer has a Bernina 640E w/BSR for $3900 + tax (7.6%). Bernina has 48 mo/SAC financing right now. I have never bought a sewing machine (I'm sewing with a 22 year old basic Pfaff given to me). A friend said to offer less. I didn't know buying a machine was like buying a car:( How much do I offer? Thank you in advance for the help:) |

What is the stitch count? The Tech can tell you this.
The BSR, new in my area, is $850.
Is it used or a floor model?
Does the embroidery module come with it or not?
Do you want 9mm stitches?
If you can answer these questions and are happy about it, go for it. Sounds like a great deal to me.
I am sure my local dealer had one last Feb for $4500 and no BSR. ------
Quilting is relaxing to me. I love to play with fabrics, patterns and colors.

Date: 10/12/12 11:44 AM That is actually a great price for the 640 with embroidery and BSR, IMO. I can't remember the MSRP but I know my dealer sold it for around $5,000 - $5400 with the emb.unit and BSR. Perhaps instead of offering less you can get the dealer to throw in a straight stitch plate, walking foot and maybe a couple of feet or an free service for a couple of years if that isn't included? Of course it can't hurt to offer a bit less. ------

Date: 10/12/12 1:47 PM You are right, it is like buying a car. Perhaps you will be like me and purchase a machine that serves you well for a quarter of a century. Perhaps you will want to trade regularly to keep current with the newest technologies. I now have a newer Bernina in addition to my old Pfaff.
I'd recommend that you read through every bit of the Bernina Love thread, fast, to give yourself some more thinking points.
By the way, hang on to your Pfaff, you will still want to use it. ------

Regarding the 640, I spoke with the dealer today and asked if she could come down $500 (not really knowing what I was supposed to do, I hadn't read all your posts yet). She said that she really couldn't come down in price any more, and there was somebody else looking at it anyway. After reading your posts, I'm thinking that it would have been a good deal. For $3900 it includes the embroidery module AND BSR and classes to learn how to use it. The dealer also told me that in November, Bernina is having a 60mo/SAC sell. She said she has NEVER heard of that. Again, thank you so much for your help, you guys are great! |

Date: 10/13/12 11:03 PM My 630E with embroidery and BSR (which was the deal at time) cost $4000 in 2010 and the 640E would have ben $5000 at the time. My dealer does sales with 30% off so needless to say that is quite a deal! ------

Date: 10/14/12 9:37 AM I'm going over on Monday to give it a test drive. If I like it, it's mine! I truly appreciate all the advice, I really knew nothing about purchasing a machine. Thanks again. Oh, one last question, the 640 has the 9mm stitch width, any opinions on that? I love it for how it works on decorative stitches, but one sewer said she was worried that doing 1/4" seems would be tough? Thoughts? |
