Date: 10/13/12 2:23 PM Okay. So I am still a beginner at sewing and my baby is due Nov. 3rd. I am to be matron of honor December 14th. The bride gave me a sample of the satin so I can get more and make the dress.
1. I've never sewn with satin
2 I'm still a beginner
3 New baby
What should I do? Try to make it? Get someone else to? It's poly satin and the bride was told that it was easier to sew. The pattern is Mc Calls 3436. The skirt is the one without the train. I think the skirt would be simple enough to make ?? But the top??
Thought? Advice?
Thank you! |

Also, if you are nursing you may be 2-3 cup sizes larger. That dress will also be impossible to nurse in unless you make the straps snapable. I would stay as far away from that project as possible since dealing with anewborn is overwhelming and exhausting. Can you find someone, who is experienced in fitting to do it for you? |

Date: 10/13/12 7:36 PM Congratulations on the new baby! This type of satin is not hard to sew. However, your size will be off from your pre-pregnancy size so there is no way to do this before. The skirt would be easy enough but the top will need alot of fitting. I think with a new baby and your skills as a beginner that this would be a big project and you would be frustrated and maybe have to get someone to do it anyway. Do you have someone who could make it for you after the baby is born? |

3 members like this. Date: 10/13/12 7:44 PM I would not attempt to sew a bridesmaid dress for a wedding 5 weeks post partum. Too much stress! You're a beginner, and you will have a new baby, and you do not know what size or shape you will be. Frankly, I'm thinking the bride is somewhat inconsiderate by having you make your dress under those circumstances. The nice thing for your friend to say is "Wear whatever you will feel beautiful in".
What are the other bridesmaids doing? Can you get someone who is making their dress (es) to make yours also, close to the wedding?
If it were me, I'd waltz into Macy's on Dec 10 and buy something in a close color off the rack. |

Or, better, find a mutual friend who has already had a baby to explain to her why asking a newly post-partum woman who is caring for a newborn to make a formal dress for a wedding is a really, really, really bad idea.
And congratulations!!! :) |

If you are going to be in this wedding, it would be best if someone else made your skirt and top. The skirt could be simplified using elastic rather than a waistband (I would put in the zipper but use elastic at the waist). The top will require a bit of fitting and would be easier for someone else to do.
Basically you have 5 weeks from your due date and I would advise not sewing until 2 weeks prior ot the wedding because your body will be going through a lot of changes in those early weeks. We all seem to do it differently.
Not all babies are the same. You could have a sleeper who does just that most of the time or your could have a fussy baby who needs a lot of holding. Or, anything in between. No, sewing this is not what you need to be doing.
My advice, get help or ask the bride to let you purchase something that works with what others are wearing. If not, hard as it may be, let the bride know that you think it would be best for her if you are not part of the wedding party. ------ "We don't see things as they are, we see them as we are." Date: 10/14/12 9:13 AM Very nice pattern, congratulations on the upcoming birth of your baby, and 'ditto' what everyone else has said. Tending to tend your newborn whilst trying to complete another important task such as this wedding outfit will put you off your sewing. Hopefully the bride will understand this and let you purchase something appropriate, or you can find someone to make this for you. Best! ------ Pfaff QE4.0, 1222E, 796

Date: 10/15/12 8:09 AM I think you've gotten some good suggestions -- I'd like to throw one more into the mix, if you're dead set on trying to make your dress. Perhaps your bride would consent to something like McCalls 6556, done like Ann's Gala Dress over at Gorgeous Fabrics' blog. You could make the top from the satin the bride wants, and the maxi dress out of a coordinating jersey. You'd be comfortable and the dress would allow for your body to be whatever shape it is by the time the wedding rolls around. Win-win!
Hope this helps, and hope your bride manages to be accommodating for you. |
