Date: 10/15/12 3:53 PM I just brought home a like new Kenmore 84. The body and wiring seem to be in perfect condition. I oiled it ,but when I began to sew on it smoke came out of the motor case and I'm hearing a bit of a roaring noise. Have any ideas?? ------ Lalaland |

Date: 10/15/12 6:14 PM One of my old Necchis does a thin stream of smoke when I first start it up (along with a spark that is visible through the vented housing). DH looked at it and assured me that it's perfectly acceptable, however I'm not completely convinced. We *did* oil the motor in it's porthole, so that could be it - oil burning off. No unusual motor noises though. I know DH mentioned something about brushes or bushings? I wanted him to open it up and change the wiring (something he's perfectly capable of), but he doesn't want to take apart the motor (something he's NOT perfectly capable of). lol
Seriously though, I'd be concerned if I were you. How old is your SM? Maybe it just needs to run and get the oil moving - however, the smoke (and the noise) would still scare me! I'd probably run it outdoors first, if at all. If you have no one around who knows anything about motors or wiring, I would take it in and have it checked out. My 2 cents. |

Date: 10/15/12 9:03 PM The machine looks like new,but hasn't been run in years. I think it's from the 60's. ------ Lalaland |

Date: 10/15/12 9:04 PM Can you describe the roaring noise? Where is it coming from? Try removing the belt, then engaging the controller? Does the motor spin nearly silently, or is the roar still present?
How much oil did you put in? You only need a drop at either end of the motor shaft. If there's too much, it could be smoking on the electrical stuff. It'll eventually burn off, but smell bad in the meantime.
If all this checks out, you may have to open the motor to see what's up. |

Date: 10/15/12 10:09 PM It made the noise and smoked before I oiled the motor. The noise seems to be coming from the right side of the machine. I'll take the belt off tomorow, sounds like a great idea. ------ Lalaland |
