Its that time again. Vote in the 2013 Contest Poll.
This survey should only take 3-5 minutes of your time and based on the responses we get, we will announce the contests we run next year. There is a good mix of old and new contests and we welcome new suggestions also. So don't hesitate to suggest.
We want help managing these contests too. So if you think you will be available to manage any contest next year, let us know in the poll.

What I could or would actually sew and what I like to see others make are quite different. I'd have a completely different list for the contests I'd most want to watch and vote in. ------ Fictionfan |

I would like to see a "Sewing with Knits" contest. It would be interesting to see participants share tip, tricks and sewing finishes for knits. ------ strikesmyfancy-2013.blogspot.com

(or even take a basic pattern you already know fits, and adapt it hugely.) Maybe using books like Winifred Aldrich, Armstrong, Pattern Magic, TR patterning and other publications to get inspiration for the styles.
There are alot of wonderful features on the forum for new and improving sewers. but I also think there are alot of people who are at the point in their creative journey where they ready for the sort of challenge to create patterns unique to them. It would be great to be able to discuss sewing issues on that level...even working without having instructions is a big step when you self-draft. sometimes it is hard to work out which step is best to do first if it is a unique style feature. ------ Sandy in the UK

For the "one pattern many looks" contest, I'd really like to be allowed to try some rather simple redrafting--changing darts into princess seams, for example. I really don't like sewing darts, have already done one version of a top where I changed them into princess seams (pretty successfully, but I really need to work on fitting things better). Now I'm thinking about trying some color-blocking, rotating darts into multiple seams. I guess this is similar to Sew Whatever's suggestion for a self-drafted contest, but I think starting from a commercial pattern is less scary. ------ 2007 fabric in: 7 1/2 yards; sewn: 7 yds
2008 fabric in, 23 yards; sewn 20 yds; given away 6 yds
2009 fabric in 41 1/4 yds, sewn 29 yds, given away 22 1/2 yds
2010 fabric in 91 1/2 yds, sewn 27 yds, given away 1 1/2 yds;
2011 fabric in: 55 yd.; sewn: 21 yd; given away: 20 yd
2012 fabric in: 60 1/4 yd., sewn 25 1/4 yds, given away 16 yds, thrown away 3 yds scraps
2012 UFOs completed: 7
2013 fabric in: 23 yds
2013 fabric sewn: 10.7 yds.
2013 fabric given away: 3 yd.s
2013 projects completed: shower curtain liner (4 yd), travel chess board (1 yd), drapey vest (1.7 yd)
2013 projects started: princess-seamed tank top
2013 UFOs completed: 2 (fleece vest, blue squares lap quilt)

Sounds like a great idea especially if you can use a commercial pattern as a base and change it significantly to make a unique garment.------ 'The purpose of most fashion is to be ostentatiously non-functional.' |
