Subject: Your hvac systems Date: 10/23/12 1:29 PM

I just learned this as I work in the HVAC field we are a rep for commercial hvac equiptment. A few years ago they passed a law that the current refrigerant used in commercial and residential systems is being phased out by approx 2020 due to envirnmental reasons. The new refrigerant will not work with current systems as the pressure is different. So your outside condenser will need to replace and also you inside evaporator coil in your furnace. A lot of us are older on this forum and this is a big expense, easily half the price of a new system. Most commercial systems have been planning for this and already have what they need in place. The residential people are going to be the hardest. So if you have central air in your home might want to look into this.

So if I just purchased a new system with R410A, does that mean I'm alright?

I am currently in a dispute with an AC company that installed a compressor outside that is r410, and married it to an r22 air handler unit. They upgraded the air handler replacing a valve in it, all of this to "save me money", it never worked properly. The inside coils froze over within 24 hours, they came out to fix it, they froze again, they came out to fix it, then I noticed that the house never reached the thermostat setting 78 (which is not really cold), also, the system never cycled off, it was on all the time, and my electric bill went through the roof. I ended up having to buy an entire new system, and I'm fighting to get my money back from the first AC company.

Don't let this happen to you.

Yes your good. It's the 22 that's being phased out. I have 22 we paid a bundle on 2005 for a new system. M husband is now rather upset. Best to try and convert now or it the near future as for all the people that don't know about this and people doing it last minute, you will be lucky to find a contractor you don't have to wait months for.

Yeah there is no short cut. Both pieces have to be replaced.

Thanks for the info. I know that uncle sam has been phasing out freon, but I didn't know it was still in HVAC systems. Just never thought about it. Refrigerators and cars use it and periodically they need to have the freon recharged, but it's no longer available for purchase.

If stuff was made before 2010 chances are it's got the old refrigerant in it. I wondering about cars. I still plan to have my car 7 years from now.
