Date: 10/24/12 12:42 PM I have a black stretch velvet skirt - 4 gore, w/ a waistband that sort of resembles a loose cumberbund. I would like to wear it (with an as yet unknown top) to the company Christmas party in early Dec.
I have tried a few RTW tops (purple crinkle satin scoop neck, red sheer poly button up over a cami), but nothing really looks good with it. If it all possible, I would like at least short sleeves, since they seem to always have the party in cold drafty ballrooms!
Does anyone have a suggestion for something that might work with a high/thick waistband? (On my short, short-waisted body)
My current thought (may or may not go through with it): Earlier this year, for the lined jacket contest, I made S2183 View D. I was thinking a satin (or the crepe side of a crepe-backed satin) version of either view B or C might work (w/ a shell or cami underneath). |

Date: 10/24/12 3:31 PM I tried view B in that pattern and it was awful. I'm short/high waisted as well. The instructions call for a tiny little hem on the wings. I went out and bought a rolled hem foot and almost tore my hair out. I finally took the foot back to the store and tossed the pattern out! I also wanted it for the same reason you do, a nice little sleeve thing.
Have you thought about something like New Look 6867? Gives a highwaisted gal a bit of length and the neck line is classic. Or if you want a "tuck in" and you are working with wovens, how about Simplicity 2599? Has a little sleeve. |

Date: 10/24/12 4:54 PM I did get the Long sleeve View to work (in spite of some odd fit at first, both the torso and the sleeves). But I would need to find exactly the right fabric to want to make a dressy version. (I've considered trying it in fleece, lol)
I am looking for something to tuck in (if possible). Or, if jacket-like would come above the waist. The waistband thing is really bulky.
S2599 reminds me a bit too much of S1806, which I've just spent some time fighting with. I like the sleeves, but they are very casual.
But now you've got me thinking of a vintage pattern I have (S5455) I've made View 2 before (and have another view 2 hiding as a UFO). Maybe View 3 w/out the eyelet panel would work....
I really need to find some good fabric for this. |

Date: 10/24/12 4:58 PM Interesting idea - but I'm not a fan of back cutouts. I had a dress back in the 80s w/ a bare back (another black velvet thing, for a company Christmas party, lol) - loved everything else about the dress, but the bare back drove me nuts.
Thanks for the suggestion, though. |

Date: 10/24/12 4:59 PM I just rec'd a Talbots catalog that is showing crisp white shirts with formal skirts and pants but come to think of it--you will want color so you don't blend in with the waiters Satin would look beautiful with the velvet--I'm short waisted too and keep tops simple and wear statement jewelry. Let us know what you decide! |

Date: 10/24/12 5:21 PM Just went to the Talbot's website to look....some interesting ideas there. Again, I'd need to find some kind of crisp shirting in a festive color, but I could make up either M6124 or S9877 (View A) both of which I have. Wonder if I could draft a French cuff? I have some RTW blouses w/ them.
I also saw a silk top in the Talbot's catalog that reminded me of NL 6110 - which I just made up in flannel and love. I'll have to try it on w/ the skirt to get a feel for it. If it works, that could be the easiest of all.
Thanks for the ideas! |

Date: 10/24/12 7:19 PM How about New Look 3360. Those wrap waists are really flattering for us short-waisted people. |

Date: 10/24/12 8:04 PM I love the princess seaming on M 6214 and it would be nice tucked in too. Or a simple red satin tank with a black and white houndstooth cropped jacket....or faux fur wrap...it's fun daydreaming about the possiblilities! |
