When sewing boxers with buttonholes do you put interfacing there? It has a buttonholes in fly area with button. I do not see any info on using interfacing but with shirts I always use interfacing & placket for that. What do you think? Sure appreciate the info.

Also how long does elastic last after you purchase it? I mean on the spool to use before it is sewn into anything. Thanks so much.

I think I'd put a little square of fusible where the buttonhole and button will be going just to reinforce and make wear longer. That's what I did on son in law's that I put the plastic snaps on.
As for the elastic life span you could measure and see if it has good recovery. An ancient factory spool from the 1970s I have here finally bit the dust-no recovery. I would make sure to use a quality elastic as nice cotton boxers will probably get worn and laundered a lot. My favorite boxer elastic is now the sew through sport elastic on a 50 yd roll that I get at Home Sew or Newark dressmaker I'm sure you can get this stuff in smaller amounts or at the sewing stores. I had never used this type elastic before using a kwik sew boxer pattern that called for it and found I really liked it. With 4 grandsons, dh and 3 son in law's I think I created a sewing monster with the boxers and pj pants so I keep the sport elastic on a roll here.

I've used a scrap of the boxer fabric as interfacing for the button area on boxers.

And what Misssewcrazy said about using quality elastic...YES! My DH has some that are older than dirt that need the elastic replaced, the material is fine. Though they've faded a bit, he preferred I replace the elastic because the they're so soft and comfy!

Using a scrap to reinforce is a really good idea-may start doing that on my everyday button front shirts since the fusible starts shredding when washed a lot and usually the scraps are still laying around the sewing area. I never intended to be sewing boxers but the last ones I got for him and the grandsons were horrid quality. Now dh has decided he only wants and will wear the ones I sew. Thank goodness they last well and sew up fast.

Thank you for the replies. Sounds like excellent ideas here . Thank you for clarifying about the elastic & buttonhole too. I had not thought of reinforcement of button area that makes perfect sense too.
I had gotten some elastic at JoAnn's but DH did not like it, too thin & rolled up when he wore the boxers with that elastic. ... so I ordered a big roll off of Ebay but now it seems to have lost the stretch some so maybe I check out the sources mentioned & see about ordering some. Thanks so much for the info!

Thanks everyone for posting. .....

Tgm the sport elastic has four little lines woven in that are meant to be sewn on. I use a little longer straight stitch on these channels. I sew all four rows but some only sew the top and bottom ones. I think it is 1 and 1/4 inch wide. Some elastic will recover with a few shots of steam from the iron. And some just dies if it gets stitched through. I am sending you a pm.

Well, now, this old native does wonder if the Wis. winter diet of winter snowmobilin' warm-up suds, Packer brats, venison jerky, Tom & Jerry's, and homemade German noodles has anything to do with the deterioration of said elastics...?

Okay I have some & now have some boxers in the works for Christmas. It says 6 inch less than the waist. So are they saying the waist size of pants as DH says makes it snugger than that. ??? The last ones I made were not snug enough for him. He does not want them tight but not loose either. ... kinda confused about this.
Thanks so much for the additional help!
