I'm thinking about upgrading my machine. There's a Bernina 830 with cabinet, case, and many different feet/notions/extras on CL for $400. I've emailed with the owner, and she has had the machine serviced regularly and it appears to be well taken care of. I'm wondering if this is a fair price for the machine. I would LOVE to have one of the fancy new models, but I think this is a little more in my price range

Go for it! I would take some fabric and test it before buying it. It sounds like a great deal. Bernina's hold their value. I'd go get it before someone else does!

You mean the 830 Record, don't you and not the new one with all the bells and whistles, right?

What kind of cabinet will the Record fit in? Is it a good price for one of the classic old Bernina's? YES. If in doubt, send a PM to Gothdom and she will tell you all about them.

Yes, the 830 Record :)

I don't have a picture of the cabinet. I have asked the owner if it would be possible to come by and do a test run. She was planning on offering it at a garage sale tomorrow, so I'm hoping I can stop by this evening and check it out.

There's also a 1090 on CL, offered by a clothing boutique going out of business. It's been up on CL for several weeks. They're asking $650 OBO. I'm considering that one as well, especially if they're willing to come down in price a bit.

It seems like a fair price to me...especially if there are lots of extra feet (that you would use). It looks to be in very nice condition. It might be wise to call a bernina dealer in your area to ask for how long parts will be available for this model.

i have one of these - got it in 1978 - and it is a true work-horse. I just oil her a bit and she stitches like a dream. I'll never part with her ... and now her "little" granddaughter - the 830LE - is sitting in my sewing room! Grab this beauty while you can ... you'll not regret it.

If you go on EBay and do a search for it, then click on advanced search and check off completed items, you'll see what prices they're getting. I think you'll be happy with your deal.

There's a sweet-looking 1090 on eBay for $721 currently. I'd check out both and see which you prefer. The 830 is all mechanical however, so will last just about forever. There are aftermarket parts and accessories for the 830. I think the power cord and foot controller are the most expensive to replace, so make sure those are included and in good shape.
