This is the over sized lap quilt I am making for DD and SIL for Christmas. It is 46 X 57. I'm sure it will be about a twin size by the time I'm done.

We (oldest DD) decided I should put a wider inner border on because it seemed the 2 charm packs were just not enough. The green border will be 6 1/2" when finished. I was going to put a finished 8" outer border on. Will that look right since the inner border is wide or should I increase it to 12"?

I already know I do not have enough fabric for the back and outer border. I bought 4 yards for the outer border and backing and it should have been enough. I need to try to find more to match. This fabric is almost impossible to find, although I found a couple of places online that may still have it.

I could leave it as it is and don't add the outer border, but I'd like to. SIL is 6'2" and I'd like them both to be able to cuddle under it. I can always cut the green border down to 4 1/2" and leave my outer border at 8" as planned.

Any suggestions??!!

Before you decide what to do, play around with it a bit. Audition the posiblities for the outer border. You might want to put a narrow pop of yellow or the salmony red color (might be the way my monitor is showing the colors) between the pieced part of the quilt and the green border if the green isn't attached yet. Maybe the light blue or the salmony color for a border and the green for binding? One of the stripes for binding? The pieced part is very light colored and the borders are rather dark and heavy in comparison. Maybe the green border should be made narrower with a lighter outer border that repeats the other colors from the pieced part of the quilt?

The fabrics are lovely and you've got a great combination of colors to play with. Plus you might get to buy more fabric ... I wouldn't worry about getting exactly the same fabrics either. You'll be fine if you repeat near matches of the colors and the quilt will be more interesting for that.

The outer border/backing is a light color and is one of the fabrics in the quilt. The binding fabric is a bright blue to match the blue in the outer border/backing. The green border is attached & it actually is a perfect match even though it is darker. I know it's hard to tell on a computer screen. I'm thinking of cutting the green border down may be a good idea. I do not live near a fabric store and have to buy online, although I did buy the green and binding fabric at a quilt shop by taking the charm packs in to match it (an hour's drive). I've spent a lot of $$ on this already and did not anticipate having to buy more fabric. I've found a couple of online places that still have the fabric I need, although not sure if they have enough of it. Thank you so much for your suggestions!!

Hmmm here's what I think, that green border is proportionately huge in relation to the inner quilt and appears to dominate. I would cut it down to about 2 1/2 inches or 2 inches finished size, and so that when you add the second border you can add a wider second border. Think photo frame with two mounts, often the first one is a shadow effect and narrow compared to the main larger matt. I just feel the inside is so pretty and right now, the large wide green border is pulling my eyes away from all those lovely fabrics and patchwork which should be the focus. HTH!!!

I think your quilt looks just wonderful. It has a very Asian look because of that wide border. I would probably bind it now. It is just lovely. Whatever you do will be a wonderful gift from your SIL. :)

I agree it is too large. The original plan was to make it around 4" then add an 8" outer border. When I realized it wasn't as big as I thought it would be, that's when the green border got enlarged.

I'll think about it some more, but I like the idea of making it 2 or 2 1/2". What do you think about the outer border size? I can order a different Fandango fabric for the backing, if needed. The colors that are in the particular one I want to use are their wedding colors.

I thought about doing that, but would really like to put the border fabric on it since that was the original plan. Also, the binding fabric won't go with the green.

Love the quilt, LOVE the green. So that you don't have to buy more fabric, I think I'd cut the green border down to 2-4". Though if the border were very perfect, that would be painful, lol.

I really like the pop of the green.
