I just got my sewing machine on Thursday, made some Halloween alterations on Friday/Saturday, and then I spent most of Sunday afternoon making my first real pattern! Actually, it's my second - I made my high school grad dress 10 years ago with the help of my mother - but I don't think that really counts :)

I chose the HotPatterns T because it was quick to print off and get started on right away. The fabric I used was actually from an old dress, a rather voluminous 92% cotton/8% spandex dress from the thrift store. There was enough material that I could lay everything out without mixing the stretch direction.

I ran into the usual size problems that most people seem to have... I was between a 6 (bust) and an 8 (waist) and exactly halfway in between for hips. I put my favourite T-shirt on top of the pattern and decided to just go with the 6.

I probably spent half an hour deciding what stitches to use. It seems like most people around here like a plain small zig-zag for knits, but I didn't find it nearly as stretchy as the real stretch stitches. I ended up doing the seams in "lightning bolt", the neck and arm topstitching in triple stitch, and the bottom hem in crosshem.

Like other people who have done this pattern, I discovered that the instructions for sewing the scarf part on just don't make any sense. I abandoned them and decided to double the scarf over at the back and sew only one side at the front. With so many layers to deal with, I did a wide zig-zag to baste the collar on before turning it under and topstitching the hem.

I also cut about 3 inches off the bottom, it was crazy long. However, the rest of it fit really well! I'm glad I didn't go up to an 8 for the waist.

You can't really see it in the picture because my arms are up, but the sleeves are kind of weird... they stick straight out to the side, with no drape whatsoever. Perhaps my fabric was too thick (it is quite heavy).

Similarly, my back-of-the-neck modification makes it fall open kind of funny:

All in all though, it's definitely wearable! I'm so impressed with how well my new Pfaff Ambition Essential sews knits. One weird thing that happened (on my bottom hem) was a couple of random birds nests on the wrong side. They suddenly happened halfway through a long seam and made a weird noise, and then the machine fixed itself and started sewing normally again. The right side looks fine, so it's not noticeable, but it would be nice if that sort of thing didn't happen on a brand new machine! Part of the problem may have been fluff (I cleaned it out afterwards), and part of it might have been the spool cap being too loose.

Thanks everyone! I added my review to the collection.

When I first started sewing machine hunting, I didn't even think I wanted to sew garments - I mostly bought it for making things like bags, costumes, outdoor gear, etc. I am *not* a fashionable person, and I don't get excited about clothing the way a lot of girls do. However, sewing this shirt was so much fun, I think I'm going to do more! Now I'm thinking about working my way up to a stretchy pair of jeans/cords that I can customize for cycling...

What a nice job you did! You're brave to choose a knit as your first project. I prefer to sew with knits, but it can be tricky at times.

Cute top! You did good!

I agree with Judy--you used a knit for your first garment--WOW! I think you could probably sew anything you set your mind to!
