This is probably a stupid question... but when you are measuring for size do you measure...

Date: 10/29/12 8:44 PM When you take your measurements, wear the same thing you will wear under the finsihed garnment. If you intend to wear a specific dress with a fancy underwired bra, do not measure with a soft "sport bra". Same comment applies for what you intend to wear on the bottom, if you wear thighs with some support, etc. - although it will be more important at the "fine tuning" stage (fitting while sewing). I can make my measurements change by +- 2 inches. I figure it's supposed to be just relaxed, but then I made a shirt according to the bust size, and the waist fit perfectly despite being 2.5" smaller than my measurement! That makes me think I should suck it in to measure, but that just doesn't seem right.

Date: 10/30/12 2:43 AM Garments include "wearing ease", which allow for breathing and putting on the garment, and "design ease", which allows for creativity. Perhaps a good illustration might be something like this: Pierre Balmain Here, the designer chose to put very little design ease into the waist, and quite a lot into the hips. (Strictly speaking, the dress has very little ease at all-- it fits the undies exactly. The petticoat incorporates Balmain's design ease.) Conversely, this dress by Yves St Laurent has quite a lot of ease in the waist, and a minimal amount in the hips. Alas, some patterns go overboard with both sorts of ease, and the result is a pillowcase. Most good patterns do print some sort of "final measurements" on the pattern, so you can ascertain whether the ease is excessive. -- Edited on 10/30/12 8:23 AM --
