Picking a good used machine Good used machine for quilter

If you want a portable people love singer featherweights and 301s. Both are fantastic for piecing not as good for quilting. If you want an all purpose quilting machine in a table, a 15-91 is great and inexpensive. People also love 201s for the large harp space. All of those are plentiful and you can easily find for under $300. Under $200 even if you are patient on the featherweight and 301. Under $100 with patience on the 15 and 201. I don't know anything about them but I do know others love their kenmores, elnas and berninas.

Or do you need zig-zag/satin, buttonhole, or blind stitch for appliqué? Vintage sounds like your best bet for price, considering your needs. IDT on Pfaffs is fabulous for piecing, Brubakers in PA and AccuSew near Milwaukee both sell refurbed Pfaffs. ------ 🌸 Plenty of machines, mostly Berninas 🌸

Piecing as well as quilting, so looking for machine with some elbow room. I was thinking an old Bernina, Janome, etc. Reallylike the Bernina 830 record, but it looks more pricey. Just want mechanical machine, no computer parts needed for what I do.

You might also like the 301, though it is a slant shank machine and the bobbin doesn't hold as much thread.

Date: 10/31/12 9:07 PM Mostly straight stitching...mechanical machine...elbow room... Sounds to me, too, like you'd love a vintage Singer 201 or 15-91. They both have generous harp space and since they often come mounted in a cabinet, they have lots of stability and elbow room. If you prefer a drop in Class 66 bobbin, go for the 201. The 15-91 has a vertical Class 15 bobbin (holds more thread and is theoretically easier to change out if you are in the middle of a large project.) Either one sets the gold standard for straight stitch and will give you year after year of trouble free operation. If you're patient you will eventually find either of these for $50-$100. The narrow feed dogs are perfect for 1/4" seam piecing as well as sewing curves beautifully. Plus you can use the seam guide as it clears the feed dogs. It may be tough to find an 830 record in your price range ( depends where you live). I would look for a 730 record. They are virtually identical feature-wise but will be less expensive. Ive owned both and think they are great for quilting. I also own a featherweight but prefer the versatility of a zigzag machine.

According to a review I read on Wordpress the 830 Record has the same harp size. Rather tight for quilting I would think. Lovely machine tho.
