The power is out from 40th Street down. So, the Garment District only has 2 streets with power. The basements are all flooded. |

the garment district. The flooding was more where the land is lower and the garment district is a bit further from the river. The power went because a transformer on 14th street blew. They had turned off power because they were worried about the power stations flooding and got them off-line. All this by way of saying that the power being turned off may not be a direct result of flooding in the garment district basements. power is mostly on in manhattan, some of the subway tunnels are functionin g..but not all. My husband said that he saw tons of garbage on the tracks on 72nd street, probably floating debris from the entire tunnel. ------

Date: 11/4/12 6:53 PM Folks in neighborhoods with power are mobilizing to help people without. The super of our building drove a station wagon stuffed with clothing to the folks in breezy point which is probably the hardest hit neighborhood in the city ( floods and fires).
Stores are collecting goods are are the local community centers. I was teaching today but hope to put in some hours during the week at an evacuation shelter.
friends have cooked food to bring to shelters ( who wouldn't want home cooked food??) I'm guessing that like in most disasters...too much stuff gets donated and not enough $$$$
