It's been 40 years since my high school French language class, and I'd just love to know how to pronounce the name of this pattern company.

Okay, I'll give this a go. JA-lee, with a short "a" as in "cat". The J is hard to explain. If you remember the French word for I, "je", it's that same soft J. It's usually written in phrasebooks as "zh" but I've always found that unconvincing. It's somewhere between "sh" and "J as in English".

HTH.

(And if anyone knows better, feel free to correct me.)

Kathleen, what a wonderful explanantion! Thanks!

This topic has come up several times over the years yet I still never knew exactly how to pronounce Jalie. Now I feel like I know exactly how to pronounce it, and it even sounds French when I say it. Well French with an Aussie accent so the French may disagree.

Good. Now if only we could get the pronunciations of "mauve" and "foyer" back to their French roots...

Ah, a sweet wish. But it probably won't happen.

Mauve: Like if you were saying 'Movember', but don't pronounce 'ember' : Mov/ember

Foyer: Fwa-yay

Jalie: A soft J, like in Jasmine maybe (not 'Djasmine'), and 'alie' is pronounced Ali (like Mohammad Ali)

HTH

Let me try:

mauve: mau = (like in motor) ve (like in have) one long syllable
foyer: fo = (like in fortress) yer (like in "yeah" - got it) two syllables, stress on "yeah"

I have a red face reading these responses thinking of all the times I shared with other (thankfully non-sewing) people that the cute top I had sewn was a ....

Jay - lee

I'm hitting myself on the side of my head. I took French for several years in high school

I'm glad I opened this thread and actually read the responses.

For American readers, the "a" sounds like we would pronounce "lawn," not the way we would pronounce "cat." I was so confused until I saw that Kathleen S. is Australian!

However do you say lawn? [boggled] (for me it rhymes with "jaune"). I guess that's why there's a phonetic alphabet.
