I am developing a Love/Hate relationship with my machine it is being finicky!

My machine will free motion quilt BEAUTIFULLY and with little effort, as long as I am using silk #100 thread and a BRAND new topstitch size 12 needle. Really Princess?? What is so offensive about cotton thread that will stand up to the abuse of a 2 year old and multiple washings???? Do you REALLY abhor it so much you have to shred it after a few stitches????? I don't know if it's me, or the machine is a bratty Princess, but this free motion quilting is more frustrating than enjoyable. ------ Cathryn

My machine started to shred thread and a little tune up fixed it up - they said I had some burrs on the needle plate where I had hit it with the needle - they used a file to file them flat and the problem was fixed. I dont have a two year old - but, for a long time my two dogs - (one 75 lb one) were jumping onto my bed and doing all the play wrestle things dogs do on my quilts finished with poly 50 wt embroidery threads ... the quilts and FMQ took that abuse fine. There were not even problems with dog claws getting stuck in the threads and pulling. I was happy with that. Maybe you could try poly? ------ Drag queen quilter!

I just started FMQ recently, and have only used silk thread, so I can't say if this is a new issue with it or not. And yes Portland I think it's time to bring it in. I just HATE!! the drive to the shop, it's going to cost me $100 at least to have it serviced, and I will have withdrawl symptoms with no machine but my serger in the house. But I just found that tiny sliver of a needle in there and I have a BAD feeling it damaged something in there.... I tried every kind of thread. Cotton, cotton/poly, and all poly. It only shreds thread when I am FMQ and not using silk. The other 3 quilts I have made using silk are still too new to know how they'll last. So far so good, and since they're on the couch they get washed pretty frequently. But my grandson loves to wrap himself up like a little burrito in his blankets, and I am worried the silk isn't going to be able to take it. Oh well, if I have to repair it I'll repair it. The quilt that is. As for the machine, I need to take it in for that. ------ Cathryn

No wonder it was making me crazy! Hopefully it will be ready for me to pick up Monday. I'll just have tomorrow with no machine Good thing I started crocheting, at least I'll be able to work on SOMETHING.... ------ Cathryn

How could he tell so fast by popping the bobbin holder off that the timing is off? It will nice and clean and should sew wonderfully again. ------ Quilting is relaxing to me. Date: 11/3/12 7:49 PM I used to think I would get a long arm -- Then I watched some videos of people loading the quilts + batting + backing onto the frame - and the rolling the thing every 10 inches -- gross. I would go more crazy than I do push pulling on a domestic. Unless something happens and I cant do it on a domestic -- i doubt Id get a long arm -- only b/c of the loading ... I dont think the sweet sixteen sit down appeals to me either -- at this point anyhow. My house is small I dont really have room for another machine to be set up all the time. ------ Drag queen quilter!
