I have a beautiful prussian blue cotton voile that I would love to use for Butterick 5486 (version C, the maxi dress). I'm going to fully line it, but I'm not sure what fabric to use that will work with the floatiness of the voile and the dress, but make the dress fairly opaque. Maybe cotton batiste?

I don't sew a lot of dresses or garments requiring linings and would love to hear suggestions :-) Thanks!

That pattern looks lovely! I would line the skirt only, not the bodice, but I haven't seen the fabric.

Acetate lining, cotton voile or batiste would all work. Cotton would be cooler. I lined a voile dress with china silk, which was extravagant, but feels very luxurious.

I'm kind of having the same issue. I have a voile that is utterly perfect for me, but I've had no luck finding a good lining.

If sewings.com actually makes things right with Nicegirl (they sent her the completely wrong fabric), then I'm going to order the silk cotton blend and some organza from them, if not, I'm going to order the voile and organza from Dharma.

I've lined cotton voile with cotton batiste, and it worked very well.

That's going to be a beautiful dress!

I would line the bodice too. The voile will be too thin/see-through. I've used china silk...either nude to fade away or a similar color to deepen the hue of your voile. Should be very pretty!

The pattern actually calls for the bodice to be lined, but not the skirt part. The cross-over drape + ties are also a separate piece from the main bodice area, so there will be three layers of fabric. China silk sounds amazing, but cotton will probably be easier to just throw in the wash - I've got a toddler, anything to make life easier is preferred ;-)

@ coconuts: silk cotton blend sounds lovely!

@ ElizabetDee: That is good to hear, I wasn't sure if cotton batiste was to sticky for voile.

@ PattyE : Definitely, the pattern actually calls for a bodice lining. I think a similar hue would be great,

Or a slip?

What about wearing a full length half slip instead of lining the voile skirt?

I sewed a cotton voile dress this summer and lined the bodice with cotton batiste. Love it! It had washed well and is comfy to wear. While I like slips, I don't think that would work for the bodice on your dress.
